996/997 Cup race car - which is the wise choice?

The two plus years of racing a 968 have now been 'upgraded' to a 2012 gen 2 cup car to track this year and then actively race in 2016 after some focussed coaching.
Great stuff. Had been looking into getting a 997 Cup myself until under threat of redundancy I went the other way and sold up! Mind you the cost of rebuilds was scary - engine and gearbox together more than I paid for my race Boxster. What will you race in? I'm sure I'll see you out at some stage - if its Britcar, GT Cup or British GT then almost certainly.
Chris.

Very clean 996 Cup just up for sale on racecarsdirect for 45k euros .............great deal or could buy a very tired 100k mile SC ..........
So true. In years to come when nostalgia kicks in, I bet people will be astonished how cheap 996 and 7 Cup cars were. Minimal electronics, old school gearboxes (in the 996 at least), 100% driver involvement. They might become the ultimate fun track day toy.Where are all the 996 Cups, BTW? I don't see many racing any more, or maybe I'm looking in the wrong places?

I think it's a Mk1 6cup with Mk2 lights, wing etc added on, but still great deal as you say if all checks out.Does anyone know if there is any truth in some of the posts I have read elsewhere that Mk1 6cups require more frequent rebuilds/are more fragile than Mk2 6cups?
Cheers

I know of another 996 Gen 1 Cup that had Mk 2 lights fitted after a fairly small off, it was the same price to do it with either lights and I guess the more modern look was favoured then rather than correctness. I know this was the case with my 993 RSR, the previous owner fitted Gen 1 996 lights when he had his off, and supprisingly 996 lights fitted a 993 with minor mods.
