Half day on the off-road, half day on the on-road/track.

Or that's what it was in 2010 when I bought mine.

Did mine last year, copied below

"Well the day came last Tuesday the 2nd of August when I was invited to drive the new Cayenne diesel, ordered mine back in March.

For those that do not know of this experience is supplied within the cost of your new Vehicle by Porsche UK

I know that there is a lot of people who are against Porsche putting their badge on a SUV, Diesel etc, but for someone like myself, 3 kids, dog etc it’s the only way of myself getting into a Porsche and its my first Porsche.

So the day started with fine weather, set off from West London at 10.30ish nice drive down the M40 and into Silverstone, in my current X5 diesel (my 2nd X5)

Arrived at about 11.45am, was booked in for the afternoon session, took my 3 kids and the wife day out

Signed in, got a brief tour and got to sit in cars that where on display very nice too, shame no Cayenne in there though ☹!!!

Very well laid out with cars on display at ground level, stairs up to Restaurant level, which has glass running down one side overlooking Porsche’s track.

Got settled in, took a seat at a table, to be met by my Porsche driver for the day, Ben, who joined myself and the family for lunch, not bad lunch too, during lunch we where just chatting firing questions at each other, during this conversation I think Ben understood that I would be speccing Air Suspension on my order, and commented that he does not think the Cayenne we would be driving has Air, I was a little disappointed but at the end of lunch he remarked “be back in a bit”
Five mins. Later back with a smile on his face, managed to change Cayenne’s you will driving a car with Air, superb I thought. During the lunch Ben had asked what I would prefer to do and how I would be using the car.

So drivers brief, and out to cars, at this point Ben went through In detail what options where fitted to the car, answered all the questions I had and onto Handling Circuit, Circuit is setup as a twisty country Road, perfect I thought and started off very gingerly when Ben asked me to push on and running through braking points etc, I am no track day expert, however as the laps went by and being lapped by a few 911’s started to press on, I can only the describe the Cayenne as on rails, and I mean rails for anyone who has not driven a 2011 Cayenne, you must, beggars belief.

Back for a quick chat and asked if I would like to take it out on public Roads, why not I thought, let me tell you, you need to keep an eye on Speedo I was up to 70mph without realising, spend half an hour or so trying various Roads, trying different settings, I know a lot is written about various systems on modern cars which I never really took In, this experience helped me understand what these systems do and all I can say is wow, and the sport button really works.

Back to Silverstone experience centre for a cup of tea/ coffee brief chat and out on the Kick plate, basically the ground has a Hydraulic plate set flush into the road surface, this is designed to show what would happen if for any reason you got into a spin or slide, did this about 8 times varying speeds, superb is all I can say.

Did not want to try any of the other sections as they where of no interest, off road circuit and Ice hill.

Back out onto the Handling Circuit now with more confidence in the vehicle (all this within a few hours, and boy the car just seems to have endless amounts of grip, car was wearing 20” wheels, now 911’s, Caymans where not passing except a 911 Turbo, but amazing is the only way I can describe this experience.

As we got out the car, Ben asked me to feel the tyres, hot, soft and very sticky was the only way I could describe these, made me smile.

Good byes where said there, met with the kids and wife, and off home.

Drive home in my X5 was an experience as although on paper my X5 is suppose to be quicker and it really is not, forget the 0-60 times left that back in the early 90”s, it’s the 30 – 70 that the Cayenne Diesel excels.

Sum up highly enjoyable, informative, fun, and confidence inspiring on the car as well as the brand, thank you Ben & Porsche

I did the full day KN driving experience;
track and off road
great on track - absolutely amazing off road - really shocked me as to how capable these things were

on the zero grip surface, it was amazing how much of an angle you could hold, then power back on to straighten up, using the 4wd

This was in a turbo S

I've had a Cayenne Diesel since October last year. It's not a sports car but it is an SUV in the true sense of the genre. The car is comfortable, drives well, handles well and it's very easy to forget that it weighs a couple of tonnes. There is not a single other SUV I have driven that can compare. In fact, the only reason to buy anything else is if you need 7 seats or a serious off roader although I have found my Cayenne to be more than up to the task off road.

So far as fuel consumption goes ...

Look forward to hearing all about it.

Do you know how far in advance you have to book? Guess it's worth spending some time in the car before booking so you can save up questions.
They have certain dates available so you just pick one thats free. They've given me a load of dates in July and Aug so I don't think its too far in advance.
If you have purchased a new Cayenne, you get a half-day session at Silverstone included.
Ok, just got back from a full morning session at Silverstone. You get there for about 8:30/45 for breakfast (included in the price, as is lunch) which consisted of 1 rasher of bacon, a rather tasty sausage, a fried egg, a rather greasy piece of fried bread and all the tea/coffee you can drink.

Then its a 10 minute 'this is our Porsche Centre and this is what we do' video brief in the briefing room before you are led over to a Cayenne S with air, running on boggo 18" wheels, in which the instructor takes you for one quite amazing circuit on the off-road course.

Then its over to you.
Don't let anybody tell you these things can't climb steep hills - they can. You get to play with all the different diff settings, and if you time it right - balance the car on two diagonal obstacles with the other two wheels dangling in mid air. You also sample the hill descent system which combines with the cruise control to let you gently down steep inclines - both forwards and backwards. Great stuff.

After a quick cuppa in the Centre, its into a Cayenne Diesel with air on 20's, for a play on the kick-plate to learn how PSM works (great fun), and the ice hill (ditto). This is followed by multiple laps of the road circuit which gives you some idea of how the Cayenne behaves when approaching the limit during high speed driving - which is very good indeed. And some idea of just how quick the Diesel is when it's in sport mode - which is very quick indeed.
Obviously no match for the 991's and Boxsters swarming all over the place, but we already knew that didn't we? Yes we did.

Then its 15 minutes in the Human Performance centre (a room that looks like a cross between a gym and a modern version of an old WWII laboratory where they used to carry out experiments on humans). You get to test your reactions for 30 seconds against a wall mounted flashing light-grid thingy. I managed to hit 37, which is apparently better than average but nowhere near the score that your average Jenson Button can get.

Next is lunch which is from 12:30 and is 3 course, but don't expect hearty lashings of good old home-cooked English pub-grub, this is Porsche, so it's of the clever dick 'posh nosh' gourmet variety, and tbh, we weren't that impressed with it. You got the impression the chef was trying just a little bit too hard and the combinations he'd come up with just didn't taste very good at all. Sorry mate.

If you plump for an afternoon session you'll get lunch followed by afternoon tea.

Managed to bump into Clive Anderson (Who's line is it anyway?, etc) while we were there, but I didn't get to see what he was sampling.

You are then left to leave at your leisure. We popped over the Hanger Straight bridge into the in-field and drove round for a quick look at the new pit and paddock complex exterior - very nice.

And P.S., before we left, a little birdie told me that senior Porsche staff have recently been over to Leipzig to sample the new Cayenne Turbo S and V8 Diesel, so a press release may well be imminent. No mention of the BiTDI though...

Yellow Calipers

I decided to have yellow calipers whenever I bought a black car, and with Porsche supplying a decent set and me choosing Jet Black Metallic, this was the time.

I thought long and hard about getting the Ceramic brakes but even I have to stop spec’ing at some point, although the amount of brake dust that comes off I now in the back of my mind think should have just ticked ceramics may be next time, LOL

When spec’ing the car I asked if they would & could spray the black calipers yellow, of course was the answer so presto that was done.

Since I have owned the car this is the most spoken about bit on the car, and I think you will agree with the black painted wheel centers and backs they just go, but I would say that.

Probably not to everyone’s taste but they are to mine

I'm keen to hear your (objective) views on the Burmeister system; I know you know your onions when it comes to Hifi!

Burmester® High-End Surround Sound System

An option that was a must have for me as High-end HiFi is what I do for a living and I spend all day putting systems that excel together.

An insight for you all about 20 years or so ago, upgraded high-end car systems where being fitted by car hifi nuts, I was one of those nuts, this group back then was split into 2, the low frequency brigade and the quality brigade, I was in the latter thank god.

My then vehicle, which I still own Audio Quattro UR, went through numerous systems from Nakamichi (cassette) with Soundstream amplifiers, through to Rockford Fosgate amplifiers driving in my vehicle 28 speakers !!!

At home then I was using Musical Fidelity/ Krell amplifiers, I remember talking to these companies about doing something in-car and I got the usual, not feasible etc etc, how things change, now most high-end companies are now in on the act.

Setting I have the Burmester set-on

Back to the system, lets not talk about price I will come to this later, performance exceptional but you must be patient, by Patient I mean it needs time to run in yes run in, when I first got the Cayenne I got home and put a CD in and a DVD-A, although by reading about it etc it seemed like DVD-A would be the one but for me just sounds to over processed and it is a dying format, if you have a Burmester system grab a DVD-A and decide for yourself. anyway CD’s I tried a mix of music that I listen to, and all sounded nice but restrained. As time has gone on the system sounds sweeter more open and lively, much akin to a Naim sound for those of you who have heard a Naim system but can be as musical as a Musical Fidelity system. I have never heard a home Burmester system as they are not supported here in the UK so would not be able to comment.

Laoding a DVD-A in

Playing DVD

I am so glad the tweeter housing was not chrome on the dash-tops as this could be a bit too shiny, a nice matt black finish

Subwoofer in boot

Against

The USB slot should have supported higher resolution music through the Burmester, I would like some control over the midrange frequencies.

Price, well for the performance very good value for money, to get an equivalent performance at home will cost you at least double the amount, if not more.

Thanks for the full report, I will look forward to a day out. Would you recommend booking ASAP or wait till you've had the car a while or dosen't it matter. Mine is due for collection in about 10 days so the long wait since February is almost over and the excitement is building!

Any recommendations for suppliers of rubber mats for front footwells as Porsche don't supply - I know they look naff but not as naff as muddy carpets after walking the hound.
