Cause unknown sadly, presumably electrical as I had just fitted a new battery. Correct battery, correctly installed (as you can imagine the insurers were keen to check that!). Everything fine and then suddenly noticed flames belching out of the engine lid. Very scary how fast it went up, followed by an even more scary 15 minute wait for the fire brigade.
Fortunately the house and the 944 in the garage were untouched. I just have some scars in the tarmac containing various molten bits of 996 metalwork as a painful reminder.

I go there at least once a year, drive a bit through the villages, have some nice lunch somewhere, head for my favorite winemaker in Klüsserath and drive home in the evening. I particularly like the way the car handles with five cases of Riesling in the luggage compartment...Richie200 said:
