Parking the Tuscan at home this evening (bit of a game of musical cars as we have 5 on the drive) the gear lever came loose and now does not select any gears! Just waggles around aimlessly.

Easy fix or big job?

They all do that Sir.

At least mine did. An easy fix if it's the same problem.

Just a loose bolt on the gear lever shaft into the box.

Thanks for the reply. I had rather hoped that it was a selection problem rather than an internal gearbox issue. Something for the weekend then.......

Oh yes, they all do that, Sir smile

10- minute- job; screw driver/ allen key required. Remove lever knob & ashtray. Remove rear vent and undo screw hidden beneath it. Remove both screws of leather cover:

Remove hand brake grip (small allen key). Lift and remove center console completely (the whole thing).

Push rubber gaiter down and you will see this:

Arrow shows the threaded hole where your allen screw was supposed to be located. Now the tricky part: FIND THAT BLOODY THING!

Screw it back in and reverse the steps above.

P.S. Loctite will not help biggrin

Great. Thanks for the step by step guide. I just hope that there is no way the errant screw can escape to the outside world!

Ahhh you may have a very early one which doesn't have a grub screw but two large bolts vertically above each other.
Mine did this. One of the bolts backs out and the gear lever pivots on the other bolt, scared the Cr*p out of me accelerating hard went for a gear and nothing. Just refit the bolt.

Cheers

G

Reason this happens is usually because the rubber grommet atop the gearbox selector stub has gone missing following a job that involves dropping the gearbox.

I would tighten mine up but without fail it would loosen off again. I found that a simple rubber tap washer in its place solves the problem and it never became loose again. Must be something to do with positioning the rub screw slighty further up the stub so it located onto the flat that is machined into it better. It also kept the gear lever cooler and damped the higher frequency vibrations somewhat.

Ok people I have dug my way in and found that my September 2000 mk1 has a single bolt holding the gear lever shaft. But it seems to be in place and doing its job as the entire lever came off in my hand like this.....

The centre console on mine was held in place by a screw under the ash tray and a screw under the rear vent. A piece of flexible hose that is probably supposed to feed the rear vent was just lying loose with no apparent place to be fitted onto.

Only just got to look at this problem closer this weekend due to work commitments. It would appear that one of the lugs, labelled 'C' below is actually broken and came off in my hand. This means that the lock ring on the gear level has nothing to locate into and as soon as you move it rearwards it comes off. So thats it then, the box will have to be removed and repaired but not until the Spring as the car has had plenty spent on it this year.

Thats a bummer. Hope you get it sorted. Was actually thinking about this thread today and was going to post to see how you were getting on.

Good Luck
