Sounds like clutch fingers gone. If so, new clutch time unfortunately...

I had that on a previous Tuscan. I'm afraid it was a garage job.

IIRC they only had to replace one part of the clutch, but because it was sold as a single item the warranty only covered the item that had failed and I had to pay for all the other bits. I was not impressed and haven't used that dealer again

Just called him and someone he knows in the trade advised pumping the clutch with the engine on which he did for a minute or so and then the car engaged gear and he has driven home. Maybe clutch stuck or hydraulic issue as car had not had a long journey (130m today from Hexham to Glasgow) He is somewhat relieved and thanks again for responding.

Don't always believe what you hear on here, because almost everyone and his dog will tell you this is the clutch fingers gone. Always doom and gloom.

My experience tells me that this is often not true. Change the seals in the clutch matter cylinder first as it sounds like the system is losing pressure. After that, check the amount of throw in the clutch pedal. There is a stop on the top left of the pedal box. Also there is a lock not adjustment on the shaft of the clutch master cylinder that the pedal connects to. It may be that the clutch is also not throwing enough. Beware that if you put too much throw on the clutch pedal/master cylinder the fingers on the clutch pressure plate can get over stressed and break. That is the expensive job.

I'm not sure how the clutch works on a Tuscan but I had the very same problem on my T5 box in Chimaera. it turned out to be the clutch fork. the rod had punched a hole through it. luckily for me I have small girlish hands so was able to go in through the bell housing and change it. If this is the case make sure your friend has a stress ball or punching bag close to hand as it is an easy job which is ANNOYINGLY FIDDLY.
