Had another look today and still not seeing anything in the front offside (drivers side) access panel. I took some pics which i'll put up here shortly.

Is it at the top / bottom or middle in there?

In my Mk 2 Lhd it is located near the left front indicator. It reads high by 5-15 degrees.
I can take a pic if you like Tony.

Cheers Jens

Hi Jens, thanks for the offer.
Don't trouble yourself taking a photo.
Mine is now reading ca 80° but I'm pretty its not that warm in North Germany this week laugh
Driving back to the UK on Wednesday and booked in for repair.

Thanks,
Tony.

The wrong reading is a general fault.Mine has same, my old has had also wrong reading
The sensor get heat from inside of wing or from radiator if driving in traffic.
The location should be changed and also the plug is in a moisture aera,
mostly total dirty and wet.
Some cars have mounted the outside temp sensor in the mirror (as Renault for example).
Much better place for this sensor.

Pls tell us your results after changing the old sensor if problem is solved

To close this one off as i finally got this sorted today, in case anybody has the same question in the future.

The sensor is in the drivers side access panel right down in the front pointing out between the horn and alarm behind the grille. It's a 14mm hex on the access panel side and a 17mm retaining nut behind the grille. Mine was stupidly tight and took a while to undo as access with the rad in place is very limited.
