Rebuilt before or after he's giving up the ghost?
Discussion
My lovely Mk1 has now about 44k miles on the clock and doesn't show any sign of requesting a rebuilt which is rather nice on the one hand but a bit nerve wrecking on the other... Even though I keep my ears pricked and having a slight panic attack whenever I hear any unusual noises, engine is running smoothly, no major problems so far.
We have planned a rather long trip to Europe in Summer and were wondering if it would make sense to have the rebuilt done before we go or shall we wait until we sit next to a road waiting for the AA to rescue us?
Thanks in advance

If the engine has done 44K without any issues, it must be a good one. A few good ones on here have got to the 100K mile mark IIRC.
Personally I'd be reluctant to have a rebuild done and then immediately go on a long trip. Minor leaks can appear after a few miles of running in that require hoses to be tightened, so suggest at least waiting until the first 1000 mile service has been completed.

Lol, for those of you who don't know us the car has taken us around Europe 3 times without an problems (touches wood). He always gets maintained to the highest standard but does get used. It won't be a problem if he goes while we're in England but would be a shame if we have problems in Austria! Obviously we don't want gritthy showing up with his newly rebuilt engine 😉 I do like the idea of getting him to power for a check up but service not due to just before we leave and at least 6 hours round trip! Maybe a chat with Dom would be helpful?

Let Tvr power check the engine, they will give you exact answers.
If all is ok you can buy a guarantee if you do trust your engine anymore.
They will also fix your minor problems, before they occur to big ones!
Maintenance is important for this engines.
