Hi all,

Does anyone know why many suppliers are no longer selling the replacement Raceproved Speed 6 rocker cover now? I notice TVR Power no longer list it either?
I notice it is Raceproved only selling it now.

For those with this fitted are there any problems with it? I always thought it looked a good product although very expensive.

Cheers

Hi Yan,

You know I've got one on my Tuscan, but only because it came with the car. Would I buy one, nope, would I swap this for an aluminium one, nope but only because it is painted the right colour.

I seems like a good idea but I think it is a bit soft and when it gets hot I reckon it yields and I get an odd oil leak. The original ones if sealed correctly are as good as gold, they work OK with the gaskets but these do tend to creep out after a while. The advantage is the gasket makes shim checking easier. The RP cover does stop some of the noise getting out and gives the option of additional oil feeds, I may connect this but only to cool the engine down on the Euro trips not for making followers last longer as I reckon this doesn't make a lot of difference.

Engine out at the mo, new billet crank being balanced with fly, cover and damper... yes I'm mad. Are you rebuilding or getting ready to or is this a spot of tinkering???

General consensus from most garages I've spoken too = pain in the arse and can leak. The standard camcover is perfectly fine smile just get it powder coated smile

Hi ShiDevil - I fancied the Raceproved one for the noise reduction, gasket seal, and the sealing for the leads down the centre rather than silicone. But take your feedback about the leaking.

Hi J - I am just planning to have a tidy up under there, new pipes (silicon and stainless), some powder coating and hinging the bonnet.
The original cover is red and finished nice but wanted the new one for reasons above, perhaps I will just buy gaskets for the original.

New billet crank nice, where did you get the crank from? That is going to be an epic beast, you did say before it is faster than the Sag already?

Couple of questions:
Where is the best place to buy quality shims? And do you know wher I can get the torque wrench settings for the engine?

Cheers Y

Hi Yan,

Yep quicker than already but when I built I just didn't like the crank, it has a grind and the deck heights were not close enough for me, so poor grinding. There is someone near me who offset grinds, I will see if I can gain 20 thou and get them decking correctly again.

Cranks are a bit tricky and frankly I think I will draw one up for the next build, after I've messed about with this offset crank, and get a new billet with longer stroke and big end oil feeds moved to more like 20 degrees as they seem a bit advanced to me. No doubt someone will come along and correct/advise me.

Shims, I have bought from Dom (Powers) before. Plug the oil galleries and lay some sign makers magnetic strip in there as well to be sure. Do all your gaps and you will find that you probably only need a couple as one from here goes there and so on. What I have found, on several engines now, is the shims can be a bit soft and get flattened which means they get a wear line across from the finger follower. I lap the edges to make sure they can rotate. If you get one with a wear line you probably are best to bin it. This can actually make a noise that comes and goes, or just gets worse, and you may find that a shim the same size is all that is needed.

Torque settings, I think for what you are doing Petrol Head Pete's guide is a good start. If you can't find it let me know and I will email it over but is on the web, I think speed six head rebuild or similar should find it. He is a good guy and obviously has more time than me as he wrote this, perhaps he can type with two fingers rather than me with one.. LOL

I might have a spare RP one available if interested. Would need to confirm however.
