A large chunk of the expense is taking the engine out and putting it back. You may risk a head refurb then end up needing to take the engine out again if bottom end issues turn up. None of it would be done in situ in a workshop.

Presumably your valve guides are shot. If you look at the thread in my profile you'll see the same thing on my engine and that's why I rebuilt it. Mine came with a top end refurb less than 10k miles before I bought it. I'm guessing GTArt didn't replace the guides then...

The original rods aren't a great design either.

Firstly, the starting price for a standard rebuild is £5.4k at Powers. That's with dropping the car off with them.

Str8six is more expensive but nearer (so less logistical costs of dropping and collecting the car).

I'm not sure anyone else offers the same warranty back up on rebuilds.

If you're looking to do the rebuild yourself then read M4TTI's thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... on his rebuild. Very good thread and an example of what can be achieved by the competent home mechanic.

Powers are finishing a crate rebuild off for me at the moment. About 2 week turnaround.

You can also drop your car off at TVR101 in Surrey who will remove and install the engine on behalf of tvr power, sending the engine away.

Do you have an itemised sheet detailing what was done. My valve guides went on a head that was rebuilt. The likelihood is they didn't replace them, therefore any other work is neither here nor there.

Are you thinking you'll just do the head only?

Cut the oil filter open, and see whats in there, also there is a strainer on the tank return, have a look in there as well

£10k? Are you thinking of an upgrade at the same time? You can buy a rebuilt Powers tall engine complete for £7kish.

Cost is on the website and quoted above. If anything is broken / failing over than that is listed then an extra cost is charged. Until the engine is apart you won't know.

Uh-oh, don't think you'll get uninamity on that one. There are a couple of threads regarding RND and they get quite fervent in the end. I have no experience of them either way. Best to request PM's if you are seriously considering them, there has been some litigation flying around.....

I think in all cases of rebuilders you'll get super-pro and super-anti driven by personal experience. My biggest question would be has anyone successfully claimed on their warranty ?

I think RND have some quality parts that can be integrated into a rebuild. I'm interested in a set of the GT cams and possibly the billet finger followers.

I wouldn't get a rebuild done by them.

RND don't do the build themselves, they supply the parts (which if you look at the Modified Speed Six wiki have produced some excellent results) and work in tandem with other engine builders. Worth giving them a call..

I had an engine work done by Str8six. There was some excessive usage of oil. Jason acknowledged it as the rings didn't bed in properly. They fixed it free of charge, no arguments no fuss. The only thing they asked for was to book in during the winter months to suit their work load. How can you argue with that?

I read about the litigation but that was between them and RG not anything to do with rebuild claims or am I missing something?
You are missing a HELL of a lot, just use STR8 or Power

I used to have RND in my favourites, when researching which would be the best for a S6 rebuild.

After reading much about all options, RND was promptly deleted from favourites....

There has been no litigation since the RG episode which incidentally RND won, which is why it's still on their website.

Someone was 'stretching the truth' when they claimed that they had been to court recently, the episode was settled with a refund, no court proceedings were required.

There are always two sides to every story.

I suggest that if you want something innovative..try RG or RND.

My T350 engine was rebuilt and upgraded by RND it was a great job well done and has been faultless and still running well now after covering over 8K miles.
