After removing the air box I noticed oil deposits on the intakes for cylinders 1,2and 3., I think the oil is somehow being sucked in from the breather hose that connects between the air box and the oil tank
Can I remove the hose , blank off the air box side and install some sort of small air filter on the oil tank end ?
Has anyone experienced similar and would I cause any problems doing this ?

Car is a 2002 mk1

Overfilling the dry sump tank tends to give symptoms described.

Make sure you check oil level engine and oil hot(>60 degC).

This is also as designed, to burn up oil vapour rather than releasing to the atmosphere. On all the S6 cars I've owned there is usually a little oil in the air box and intakes. Most likely nothing to worry about.
