Hey guys,

Started the carpets today, all the old manky one out and started to work out how the new set will go in. Should be quite straightforward but need to make sure I get the order right so it will be OK smile

Question is, how do you get the lower dash out? I could probably work round it but won't be easy and could make an error.

Looks like you need to take the steering column out or the whole steering binnacle? Really???

Hello Matt,
Yes if you don't remove the column you will need to cut the tray, which wasn't an option for me. Without removing the tray the area under the radio on the tunnel will be difficult.

Have you removed the dash top yet. You'll need to remove this to access the bolts holding the column. Then you'll need to remove the lower column coupling bolt. You'll need a torx socket.

If you want any pics let me know I have the whole thing in bits.

It's a scary sight..

Thanks for the post! I don't mind cutting the tray, assuming it's going to be the small section above the column however I would rather not. If it's going to save a lot of time then I might just change my mind!!

In havent taken the top off yet, again wasn't entirely clear where to start. it's a very unfriendly design that dash! Any guidance you can give would be really helpful smile

The dash top isn't too bad to take off, only 2 10mm bolts. Passenger side is relatively easy as there's more access to bend you arm up behind the dash. The bolts themselves are directly above the actual tray in the two corners, passenger side i usually manage to get a 1/4" ratchet with small extensions on via the tray, just use your other hand to guide it onto the bolt.

Drivers side is more of a pain though, i end up lying backwards in the footwell, feet out the roof and use a stuby 10mm spanner to crack it off then just undo with my hand.

Not taken off the tray though so can't help on anything there i'm afraid.

When I did my carpets I did have to remove the column.

In order to get to the 'tray'/lower dash it was a case of removing centre/tunnel console to access 13mm bolt to remove radio pod. With dash top removed, unbolt one of the alloy supports - best is driver's side. Then undo c/sunk allen screw from pass side and it will then be possible to rotate shelf and slide out of position.

Matt,
The dash top bolts through plates as seen in these pics. The bolts go through the plates and up into the dash top itself.

The steering column is then held by two cap head bolts and a single large nut. The column coupling is an 8 mm torx bolt. I'd undo the lower one so you can look at the coupling on the bench. They develop play in them.

You'll need to disconnect some wiring but nothing hugely tricky.

Three fixings points that the column attaches to

Thanks guys.

Well, I started to take the column out (undid all bolts for steering assembly and colum bolt) but couldn't work out how to get it out!

So ended up taking the dash top out, cutting the tray section behind the steering wheel and taking both tray end pieces out! All a faff and going to be a pain to put back in but short of it is that it's now all out. Phew

Cheers!!
