Favour needed from Mk 2 owner - boot lid
Discussion
My MK 1 boot hinges have play in them so I ordered a new pair from TVR Parts. They recommended later upgraded items so I bought a pair of those. When Elmwood tried to fit them on its service this week, the strut interfered due to revised articulation angles. They queried it with TVRP who advised a shorter strut needs to be fitted but they don't supply them. Hence I'm looking for a helpful Mk2 owner to do some measuring for me.
Can you also confirm the part number and whether your boot lid has a spoiler, not sure if the Mk2 came with none or the small one as standard with the big one being one the S ? I also understand the Mk 2 has two struts and the later hinges have ball pickups on both sides. I may upgrade mine to balance the forces as its going in for a respray in March and I can get the extra bobbin installed on the LH side of the lid then. Not sure what N rating I would need then as I don't have a spoiler. May have a chat with SGS to work it out, don't know if half the current single rating is the right logic.

The MK2/3 only has a single strut as standard, only the convertible had two struts which I think maybe are a different size. The standard MK2/3 strut is 275mm between ball centres and 540N rating. I have an uprated strut from SGS which is 650N as the standard item could not keep the heavier Tuscan S (large spoiler) boot lid open.

Hi Speed3,
Only just got home.
I'll get some photo's posted later today or tomorrow. Just waiting for the rain to stop.
Cheers,
tony.
That would be great Tony, having Nick confirmed the Mk 2 Targa is the same as the Mk1. Length/spec of the struts on yours is now the important info. Only just got home.

Thanks Tony but have just solved the problem with Racetech's help, two struts on their way. Only just realised today that the strut now lives within the hinge rather than having the top secured directly to the lid. That means I don't need to have a new bobbin installed as I'd expected. When Elmwood explained the problem I didn't twig what had changed, penny only dropped when I got the hinges out today. Looks like it should be a much neater solution and put no loading on the fibreglass.

OK, glad it looks like your sorted.I'll still get some photos done when the weathers OK.
Three cancelled flights later, I'm in to day 3 of travelling to India.
Finally arrived in Delhi tonight with a nice 6 hour layover before my next flight.
Wish I was home taking photos for you.
Well finally got around to fitting the new hinges today and we have a problem. It would appear the struts Racetech supplied are too long. They cause the lid to foul the bodywork at full extension and to sit proud when down:
Tony, if you're in the country it would be appreciated if you could get your measuring stick out ! These ones are about 190mm between centres and over 200mm total length and they're supposed to be the shorter of the two options Racetech have.

Mine are 200 mm ball to ball extended (boot open) , 150 mm compressed (boot closed)
You can get different length ball ends ... originals are 10mm thread to socket bottom. I am a bit surprised convertible hinges will work on a MK1 on both sides. The petrol cap is flush with the body on a convertible , I thought it was raised on a MK1/MK2 Targas ??? Hence TVR only fitted on the drivers side. I must be mistaken . Your new hinge is slightly different to the original convertible hinge not sure if that's your problem? Is it custom made or the original Ford MPV part ?

They don't foul the fuel cap. Without the struts on the the boot closes fine but opening they need a "push" from a strut to clear the rear corners as it kind of rises in two stages with this particular articulation. They were recommended by TVR Parts when I tried to order the original type so they think they will work on a Mk1

Do you know the stroke length of the gas struts ?? The barrel looks a little longer than mine 98 mm and the stem is 60mm end of barrel to the thread of the socket end piece. I get about 50mm of stroke when compressing the strut. Can't look at my car (it's on the top of my ramp) , but the hinge does pull the lid away from the top corners as it opens. Yours looks close to the body work on the photo but you need a snug fit without fouling.
