My Red Rose Idles at 7-800 rpm.

Is this std?

The thing is, at this speed there is a lot of vibration and the engine sounds like it will stall (which it does when just started from cold).

I know that this is not an engine that Mercedes would use and it's character is all the better for it. Unfortunately I have not seen another car in order to draw a comparison.

Bet you get a load of replies saying they're all like that.
Mine is. (Tuscan S).
When cold it idles at 700-800 and sounds awful and often stalls after initial starting after a few seconds.
Then when warmed up properly runs beautifully at 800rpm, and sounds lovely.

Your idle speed is OK - not sure about the vibration though. It's not your teeth rattling together with the noise, is it ?

Hot idle should be 800-900rpm.

Cold idle should not be below 700rpm.

If you have readings lower than the above, it may just need a tweek, but in general a lowering of idle speed means you valve clearances are closing up and need adjusted ASAP.

Damo M, you might just need your throttle pots balanced, but it could also be a broken engine mount.

cheers

I think different dealers set the idle at slightly different values. On my standard - non-RR - Tuscan I have had the following

IIRC Peninsular and Racing Green set my cold idle at about 800 (flicked between 7 & 8 on the display) and hot would then be 900-1000.

TVR power have just done a service and cold idle is 700 and hot (water 94 oil 92) is 900 ish. The 700 idle is a bit lumpy but does not last for long. No idea on the stalling front as I have only got it back yesterday and did not use it today.

My car idled at about 800-900 warm or cold for the first week I had it. It went back to StreetTVR to have an occasional high rpm misfire sorted.

They informed me they had adjusted all throttle body pots (excuse me if I have this slightly wrong - didn't fully understand the explanation), it now ticks over at about 1000rpm, both hot or cold. It did sort the misfire out though :-)

My Tuscan S idles @ 900 hot or cold. It used to be 800 and would stall repeatedly. High vibration is probably broken engine mount - not expensive from memory.
