To be honest the M3 is out anyway, it just isn't THAT much of an improvement on our Impreza.

At the risk of sounding a bit too flash I've got four cars, 2002 Tuscan 4.0, 2001 BMW X5 4.4 Sport, 2002 Mini Cooper S, 2003 Ford Street Ka.

Tuscan has had a few 'build quality' issues associated with hand built cars, but nothing that stopped it going (and sounding) great. My biggest problem is the speedo is useless above 100 mph (in germany! ;-) ) It's done 6,000 miles BTW. Touch wood NO ENGINE TROUBLE!

Street Ka is 2 days old and has no problems.

Mini Cooper S is 6 months old and the only problem was the gear knob came off in my hand !! Fantastic car.

The X5 is great but it's on it's 3rd (or 4th?) Sat-Nav unit and the phone (the 4th?) isn't working at the moment. The boot used to open itself rather helpfully when i stopped at traffic lights!! How much do you think BMW would want for a new Sat-Nav system when it's out of warranty??

The moral is don't beleive the hype with how 'perfect' german cars and BMW are.

Having said that I'm not sure I could live with the Tuscan everyday as an only car but when you drive it it's smiles all round and gets unbelievable attention.

Running beautifully. Approaching 11,000 miles, bought it at 9,000. It had a rebuild at 8k - not one drop of trouble since. Obviously a tee-totaller because it hasn't touched it's oil! Goes through some screenwash though.... wonder how all those splattered bugs got there?

Since you ruled out 'follower' rebuilds, (Last month was it's second in 13 months).....Had my Tusc since Dec last year and covered 4k without incident..Chimp 500 before that was faultless for 9 months and 6k miles.

14,000 miles from new in 17 months.. no show/car stopping problems. a few 'niggles', rattles and wobbles and a couple of rough running probs but nothing major... may have to sell though soon due to arrival of a small person..

I don't understand why so many people own fantastic cars and only do a few miles each year... ho hum..

I ruled out my engine prob because it happened before I bought the car, so I personally haven't had a problem. Does that still count?

"Y" reg, brought at a year old with 2100 miles on the clock, now 2 years old with just over 6k miles, and only problems, a blown indicator bulb, new set of rear brake pads, and needed to get a 15amp fuse upgraded to a 20amp, something to do with the the management system. Must say, I do get very concerned hearing about all these engine rebuild requirements, and was starting to think, they can't all be duffer's, so interested to hear that there is some good news on the reliability front out there !.

A nice way of getting round speedo problems (unless the whole unit is up the spout!), is to get a RoadAngel. As well as the usual camera / blackspot info, it gives a digital readout of speed which is obviously dead-on. Instinctively I find myself using this (which fits into the tray beautifully) 100% of the time, and thats with a speedo that does work!

Afternoon,

just in reply to the question earlier, I traded in my ZM Roadster for a reflex purple tusc, Had no probs so far just the usual, tyres and such, my car does use a wee bit of oil, but they all seem to. ( oh and It leaks a bit when it rains but hey it is a TVR after all )

Cheers

Dave.

Only had mine for about 2 months and 2,000 miles but was wondering if the cars that have engine problems are predominantly everyday run arounds or summer / weekend only cars?

Would be interesting if there was any sort of connection between use and problems. Don't tend to read too many threads about the engine going pop because if it happens to me then there is not much I can do but get it sorted. However, the ones I have read do seem to have 'low' mileage for their age. Just curious and I am sure there is no connection!
Could anyone who has had engine problem put the age of the car and milage on so they can be compared?

Thanks
- Pete -

I’ve have read most of these posts and the mileage on the car is average between 2K and 10K.

Most of the rebuilds I have hear about 7-9k miles. Now this is ridiculously low mileage for an engine rebuild. Most diesel cars are just run in here and their compression ratio is around 18:1-20:1 compression and most petrol car are around 9:1-13:1. So the engines pressure is nearly twice on a diesel that’s why you get so much torque.

Anyway, what I’m trying to say is, the cars have done next to no miles. IF these cars are so called race technology engines I dare say not many of you drive them to there limit therefore, the car is not being driven by a boy racer (sorry girls reading). So why the rebuilds??? Why with little to no miles do the engines let go?? Why do the components fail??? Look at the post by Dammo to see what TVR think after 6 months.

I’m not trying to hijack this thread, but I wouldn’t be surprised, and believe me I really hope this doesn’t happen to any of you, if some of these engines undergo some surgery soon.

By the way, I love my Tuscan its fantastic, but driving a car and not knowing when the engine MIGHT let go and knowing that you will have to wait around 3 months to get it back from TVR factory, does take the edge off a little… But only a little…

Telboy said: ...nothing in the handbook service sheets either. I'm presuming something would be written in there somewhere if it had ever had a rebuild....

Nope, nothing in my service book either despite a couple of trips back to Blackpool - not sure if TVR would tell you if you asked them, but I have not seen anything written anywhere about rebuilds, either in service books or any other documentation from TVR - sorry
