What are the real stats on failed Tuscans

April 2001 Tuscan S
13500 MILES, I'm 2nd owner
3000 miles done by me since bought in Mar 2003
No previous engine work with previous owner
Recently engine had to go to TVR power as it was guzzling oil.
New valves, head gasket, pistons, rings etc..
Worryingly it is stil loseing coolant.
few niggles to sort at 1k service incl low idle speed, and loose exhaust system
Other previous faults include, faulty door mechanism, stuck service bonnet, carpets unstuck etc.
Love it to bits though although the 6 weeks away with engine problems tested my patience to stretching point..

Rebuild at 6,500 miles
New HT leads at 16,500 improved the smoothness at constant throttle. Now 17,000 miles and nothing to report. - except its the most fun you can have when not in bed.
Infact, I have had to spend more on my everyday Saab 9-5 at its last service (but your not interested in that are you?).

Tuscan 4.0L
2000/W
Sold July 2003
Dealer excuse shown in brackets.
1 x Engine Rebuild (you'll get that sir)
2 x Failed Radiators (you'll get that sir)
2 x Replacement Dash Pods (you'll get that sir)
Significant suspension work (you'll get that sir)
Flooded footwells (2 years no fix)
Randomly opening doors (2 years no fix). This one really freaks you out when you're doing significant speed on the M1 at night and the interior light comes on and the door pops open. Or better still when it's the passenger door and you're driving by yourself and a cyclist is about to undertake.
The points above are the ones which really p*ssed me off. Plus all of the other sh*t:
Screen wash never, ever worked. (you'll get that sir - never fixed properly)
Boot didn't open/close properly.(you'll get that sir - fixed)
Windows stuck open during rain storm.(you'll get that sir - fixed)
Indicators stopped working.(you'll get that sir - fixed)
Throttle pots replaced.(you'll get that sir - ouch, how much - fixed)
Passenger seatbelt hardly ever worked. (you'll get that sir - sort of fixed)
Occasionally random brake lights.(you'll get that sir - sort of fixed)
Occasionally random reverse lights. (you'll get that sir - sort of fixed)
Self operating wing mirrors.(you'll get that sir - fixed)
Hand brake stuck off or on. (you'll get that sir - sort of fixed)
Ventilation system didn't work. (you'll get that sir - fixed)
Headlights fell into body work because the cheap line of bathroom sealant that keeps them in place gave way.
This isn't a totally comprehensive list. It's just the ones I can remember.
I did once compile a full list for the benefit of Mr Wheeler and chums, who then promptly ignored me and turned a mildly annoyed customer who needed a little TLC into someone who will tell anyone who is prepared to listen what a god awful car my TVRD Tuscan was.

Tuscan 4.0 14,300 miles (3,600 when I bought it)
10/2000
Owned by me since 1/02
First year no problems to speak of except a couple of lambda (sp?) sensors and throttle pots.
Just got the car back after a 15 week rebuild (cam shaft etc). Once the engine was fitted it was discovered that the ECU needed replacing. TVR sent one down but that didn't work either so they sent another which did work.
I've been told that the catalytic convertors are on their way out and the screen in the dash pod has developed a fault. The car suddenly seems very fragile!

It would be nice to have the choice. I took the original question as being about the engine, so out of your list the relevant bits are that you have had one rebuild (probably follower related?) and a couple of throttle pots. I'm assuming that your car was one of the very early ones.
The problem with these types of polls is that there are a few people who always seem to come out and tell you just how bad their Tuscan was and how they wouldn't touch another etc. It always detracts from the usefulness in my mind as people then don't bother posting.
Just 2p worth.
I sold my Tuscan a few months ago at a massive loss on the new price.. Ho hum... Not too bothered by that.
I had no 'major' problems but loads of 'little' problems... Loved the car to bits but a combination of huge running costs (compared to previous Griffs), forever getting niggles sorted and baby due made me finally throw in the towel.... still miss it...
Reading this forum today one thing I notice is how few of the original posters still exist on here from a year or two ago. So I conclude owners have either become board with the forum (it is a little repetitive) or have given up on Tuscan ownership ..
A poll would be interesting but I don't think we'll ever know the truth - only TVR will know this (if they keep records) and I doubt that will become public knowledge....
Still love em and still hate em...

New March 2002.
18000 miles
Engine rebuild at 11300 miles (followers/cams) Nov '02
Engine rebuild at 17800 miles (followers/cams) Jul '03
No other problems.
Tuscan't, sounds like a dealer problem to me since I know of other people that have had similar issues and have had them rectified without a reoccurance of the problem.
Secondly, I don't believe many Tuscans' will see engine issues within the first 10k miles. I just notice theres a lot of posts that are "mine's fine, runs a dream".. and then follow that up with "2000 miles". It's barely run in. I thought I was scott-free til my engine went bang just shy of 12k. And I notice that the trend with those that have had engine work haven't had to do so before at least 8000 miles.
Oh, and i've ignored my niggles, because quite frankly they don't bother me. And I can't be arsed to think and list them all - but ones that come to mind are, failed door encoders, failed lambda sensor, and the aircon didn't work when first delivered. All fixed by the dealer (Mole Valley) and hence, not an issue.

Tuscan 3.6
August 2002.
Bought as an ex-demo in Nov 2002 with 2000 miles on it.
Engine went bang in a fairly loud and sudden way at 4200 miles.
Loads of minor niggles in the first 6 months but now pretty much sorted.
Currently at 13200 miles and goes like a rocket – have surprised quite a few bikers recently
Definitely the best purchase I’ve ever made.

Tuscan 3.6
3000 miles
New since January 03
Minor niggles with speedo, door encoders, body fit, wiper motor - nothing drastic... all fixed by dealer.
Still very happy with it, love the way it drives and looks although nervously monitoring posts about engines going "bang" at 8-10k miles.
Typical set of reactions from the dozen or so business friends/aquaintances that saw it for the first time at a golf day today -
Wow.... great car, how quick is it, what did it cost, what is going on with that paint job (mine's a Chameleon Green) etc but....
3 conversations along the lines of "my, you're brave I thought these were unreliable/dangerous/fall apart at the drop of a hat etc etc etc
I suppose 25% isn't bad but it does reinforce the point made by Tony and a few others about general perception of the cars (and Tuscans in particular)
