Anyone done this?

One of mine is discoloured so needs replacing. I'm guessing that removing the lens is a PITA, but any ideas appreciated!

Hi - the whole indicator needs to be changed, I believe. Further, the design was changed at some point so it may need both sides changing to keep things consistent left and right.
Note that the assembly is bonded in, and needs to be cut out and new one bonded back in.
Better to use someone who has done this before! The good news is that you can still buy 'em. £140 ish for a pair I think.
Hope it helps,
J

New ones do not need to bond in.

I found easy way to fix them.
Use a o-ring 3 mm, fix this o-ring in the groove of new indicator
and grease o-ring. Then push the indicator with force in position.
All is watertight and indicator can easy dismounted.
I have fixed it 7000mls ago like this, no complaints up to now!

But how exactly do you get the old indicator out?

its secured with fibreglass, or a plastic padding type gunk that goes hard when it sets.

Get a sharp stanley knife with some spare blades, and if youhave a blow torch you can heat up the blade to make it easier to cut through.

im sure others have different techniques, but that works for me.

I assume you mean from the back? Is that from the panel in the engine bay?

Cheers,

changed mine earlier this year and used the following method recomended by an ex trv engineer.

find yourself a bit of wood about the same size as the indicator (i used 3x2)
wrap the end with a teatowel and place this against the lens
now comes the scary bit!!
hit the end of the wood with a hammer yikes i kid you not!!
when the light "debonds" it makes a sickening crack, couple more taps and its out thumbup

Exactly the easy way to do it as above descibed, works fine, takes only a few
minutes all other ways are total boring and you get blooded hands.

Are you sure half the wing won't cave in when I hit it?

I have done it like above and no damages at the wing, but
the old indicator is destroyed.

Call Surface and Design and ask them for quick word of advice, I'd say.
(they have just done precisely this job for me) J

no it will be fine, the glue is weaker than the wing so dont worry, i know it sounds very odd to take a hammer and lump of wood to your P&J but is by far the best way. biggrin

gluing the new one back in?? now thats the hard bit, oh and wear latex gloves when fitting the new one, i didnt and spent the whole weekend scrubbing my hands paperbag

Had to replace lamp in O/S unit.
Tried to unscrew lamp-holder through 'hatch'. Whole indicator unit started turning.

With a bit of persuasion, unit was loose in wing, but could not get it out past the dip beam projector.
Removed dip beam light (popped off) letting go adjuster nuts.

Got indicator unit on bench and with some pipe pliers got lamp carrier unscrewed....replace orange lamp.
Applied good smear of Vaseline to threads so that it's not this much of a work up in future.

Applied 30 minute Araldite to front metal ring and re-mounted whole assb'y in to the wing using scrunched up newspaper to hold whilst glue went off.
Replaced dipped beam headlight....Simples.
Only a TVR could force you to take 3 hours to change a feckin' light bulb!!

It's comedy isn't it. "I'm just going to change the indicator bulb love".

Two hours later... "I've brought you out a brew. I heard shouting. Why are your hands bleeding? What is the bonnet doing on the lawn?"

Hi, I have the same problem, how is the dip beam light held in? Is it just by the adjuster nuts?

My indicator unit has fallen into the wing after I attempted to unscrew it to change the bulb, which of course started working as soon as it fell into the housing but I cannot work out how to remove the dip beam unit and don't want to break it!

Cheers

Whitey, just saw your Q...maybe you've sussed how to remove dip beam unit by now?

Bottom line is that the 3 off adjuster 'bolts' have a plastic cup on the end which grips a ball on the mounting ring which is bonded to the wing aperture.

I'd get everything doused in WD-40 or spray lubricant then work the adjusters 1/2 turn each way and try to 'pop' the cup off from the balls by applying force from the front...Yep, it's fraught with breaking the glass. It might come with leverage on the unit from the inner wing, but there's not a lot of room.
