Bit of a newbie question here.

I've bought the connector(3 pin)from Clevor Trevor/Raceproved and the serial to USB adapter cable from Maplins.

I've just been grovelling in the drivers side footwell and found the ECU (MBE). What I can see is the wrapped cable 'bunch' going to the ECU, and coming off this wrap is a 2 pin connector on a sort of flying lead. Both wires to this 2 pin connector would appear to be black(?). Have I found the correct connector? I ask, because I have seen references to 2 pin connectors - - but on early cars - - mine is a 2004 Tuscan S Mk.1. The MBE ecu has got "Racing Green" written in felt tip, could this indicate a replacement ecu?

OR - am I looking in the wrong place entirely? Previous threads have advised that the 3 pin connector is tie wrapped to the loom going to the ignition switch/column console but I'm unable to find a 3 pin at the moment.

Thanks in anticipation!!
Nick
Bump!
I'd really appreciate some guidance here folks!
- - Does the connector have colour coded wires going into it?

Thanks again, Nick

Hi,

I have read this thread several times and still am not able to connect to the ECU. I got the car with a serial-serial cable to connect directly to the ECU. But opening the ECU does not seem like a simple job.
So i bought the 3-pin to serial cable and a serial to USB converter. Tried with several USB laptops without success (software tells me there is no connection).
I then bought an old laptop with Windows XP and a serial port. With no result, still no connection (port 1, tried 4800 and 9600 speed, immobilizer off).

Is it possible to measure if the cable is connected using a multi-meter?
Next step could be to open the ECU and connect the 9-pin connector directly. Any suggestions on how to open the ECU? Seems to be hard to reach/impossible to open....

Any advice is welcome. Driving me nuts...

Thanks,
Maurice.

Ok I also had this problem with only having a 2 pin out.'so the solution is to open the ECU by unscrewing the 4 small Allen head bolts where you will find a female serial lead port Make a lead as per the wiring diagram as those you can buy off the shelf didn't work for me. Connect up to the lap top. I found a serial port on my lap tops docking station. Turn off immobiliser and hey presto it works.

Some models around 2003 have a dead 3pin on the drivers side and live 9 pin plug on the passenger side.

Try contacting garage/dealer who may have direct knowledge.

Mine was tricky to see through the software to begin with then and worked when connecting USB last.

The USB has to be on COM 1.

I also have a 2 pin connector on the drivers side. Is connected to the loom close to the ecu. What could that be?

2 pin is presumably transmit and ground as per the ECU diagram on My Tuscan.

No one has said on here that they are using this.

I took out the ecu unit today (easy, just unscrew one bolt) and connected the laptop directly to the 9 pin serial connector. All worked fine then.

grrrrr..... still not working frown got the engine running, so immobilizer's clearly off. Launch and still have same error mesage.

Checked the Location like u said, it is Port_#0001.Hub_#0007. So that looks correct, right?

The only thing is it says:
This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

So I click on that and point it to Downloads/diagnostic-new (include subfolders), hit next but it says windows could not find driver software for your device...

Also the yellow car window says there's no configuration
So, am I installing the software correctly..? I unzip all files by clicking on ECUDIAGS, and i have been launching the application with it too, that's correct?
Help...........and many thanks for your time!
Slight thread resurrection!!
I'm having exactly the same difficulties at the moment. Got a laptop with only a USB connection. Got the right cables etc but there are no options available to do with anything with a COM port?

The software loads up ok so presumably it should be able to run, but i'm clutching at straws at the moment! Can anyone shed any more light on the issue above?

Cheers
MrChips

I think it is f10 you have to select the com port menu but it is definitely a function key.

The software is very selective over the usb/serial convertor, the maplin one seems the best, I tried 3 before I got it to work properly and 2 sets of drivers.

The com port needs to 1 or 2 as there is no other option on the software, sometimes things like bluetooth get in the way. The UART setting needs to be set to low.

That should get you up and going, just ask if you have any problems.

What should the connection time be to connect to the ECU?

I can see data coming in on Hyper Terminal, but when I try with the software all I get is 'Please Wait' - trying to connect?

What should the speed be set to? 4800, 9600?

Thanks

If you press f10 you can change the baud speed, I think it is 4800 by default, but been a while.

Holy thread revival

Please no laughing....

I have a three pin cable and when looking, can only see a single pin in a two pin plug, this is coming off a grey wire. Is there another plug or is there such a thing as a one pin plug?

I've come across two, three and nine pin connectors, plus OBD connectors, but never a one pin!. I'd keep looking in both footwells. What car are you trying to connect up?

The 2001 Tuscan I owned had a 9 pin D-type connector. It was the later cars (2005+) that had the three pin connector or the ODB connector in my experience. You may need to check inside the ECU, as earlier posts in this thread, if you can't find a cable and perhaps create one.

Ok, tried a little harder this time....

There are two connectors that appear to come from the ECU, there is a three pin and a two. Will get the laptop out now and see what happens.
