It's a rover 214 1996.

Okay it cranked, started and ran fine before the work so it must be something I have or haven't done...

It's had a new head gasket, head skimmed and timing belt.

Now when it turns the engine over it turns it slowly and whir whir whir, like there is a maaasive resistance stopping the starter motor turning it over properly.

I've got the cam cover and timing belt cover off and can see everything turning, I have taken a spark plug out and put a screw driver in there and cranks turning also. Certainly not at any kind of speed that would start the engine though!!!

Battery volts was 12.4v... not full I know but should certainly be enough for at least a half hearted crank. I've checked voltage at the starter and that's fine.

So I slackened the timing belt a tad (manual tensioner) and no difference. I've taken the auxiliary belts off, no difference.

When I returned to the car about 4 days after taking it apart I did struggle to turn the crank and some rust built up. Initially tried doing it in gear with the brake disc, then put the pulley bolt in and a breaker bar sorted it easy enough.
When the cams and belt was all together I turned it over by hand easy peasy.

I haven't had a jump pack on it yet. I did charge the battery for couple hours though.

I'm struggling to justify a new starter motor as it worked perfectly before!!

Anybody ever seen this or know what I could have done?

Well just looking online and I don't think i've timed it properly.

It times with the pistons all level as per the dots on the crank.
Then the inlet pulleys plain dash points to/mates with the exhaust arrow on the exhaust pulley.

I did plain line to plain line. Fortunately no damage as it was turned over by hand and no interference.

May or may need be the problem though as cranking doesnt seem right
