There's a company in Scotland now making bio-butanol from the draff left over from making whisky. Butanol has a much better energy density than ethanol and doesn't harm engines. Self evidently the implication is that the more whisky we drink the more bio-butanol we can have!

Hell, if they actually do that then I'm quite happy to carry on drinking more whisky.

Actually I'm off to have a wee dram the now.

Do we have a general idea how old the car needs to be for the extra biofuel to work/ or not work?

Given that they invented it's modern incarnation, it's not too surprising that they'd lend a hand saving it. wink

Oh sh*t indeed.

I have a couple of 90's GTI's Mk1 & 2 ??

I was hoping to pass these on to my to my boys when they get old enough?!?

What does this mean in real terms? Will old cars just be wiped off the UK roads?

IceBoy
They will force you to remove the engine and replace it with a wood chip burning stove!

Does anybody know of any useful updates on this?

yes you will need a woodburning stove fitted from 2019

I suspect E5 is pretty much ubiquitous nowadays due to the RTFO. The slow adoption of E10 in Germany may put a damper on further increases.

Butanol. Will not be cost effective vs ethanol and is not a wonder material.

E5 is fine as I understand it. E10, on the other hand.....

Interesting?

Says no Ethanol in any Super petrol.

Tesco Momentum does contain Ethanol.
http://www.tescopfs.com/our-fuel/specifications

Both my cars run OK on it though.

Sitting next a chap at work who used to work at Stanlow Refinery and he says Tesco Regular is lowest quality they refine.
But it still meets the minimum Standard for 95 unleded.

I believe BP are still claiming their Ultimate premium fuel does not contain ethanol.

Check the pump, as I believe that they now show EN228? up to 5% Ethanol.

Bit old, but best I can find.

Shell would not answer any questions when asked a while back, so we have to assume is does have Ethanol in it.

Esso super also now has changed to EN228 on the pump instead of BS7800, so that can have up to 5% Ethanol as well. But last I heared Esso said no Ethanol here in South Eastern zone.

Has anyone mentioned that 10% ethanol fuel returns around 10% fewer MPG making it counter productive ie. it will create a nett increase in the amount of fosil fuel used rather than save any.

Then you have to consider all of the car fires that it will be responsible for.

Some turbocharged cars will gain more from the increased resistance to knock than they lose from the lower calorific value (which is why Tesco/Greenergy 99RON works for Imprezas etc now), but most people will see an increase in fuel consumption, a drop in power and in many cases it will get all orangy and hot...
