RE: Biofuel timebomb
Discussion
says on the inside of my 06 leon 140 pd diesel filler cap do not use bio fuel. I've been filling up at Morrisons and thought id ignore the label on the pump informing of the (cant remember the percentage) biofuel content.
My car was running rough after a few weeks of filling up and recently went in to limp mode. I flushed the fuel system and have used BP/Shell and not had a problem since. Shame it's a pain i have to pay extra just so my car actually runs, diesel is already 10p a litre more than petrol.

Ah yes ... it's green innit... good for the environment... except it isn't.
Growing fuel instead of food.
Scrapping perfectly usable cars to make new ones - that are more fuel efficient BUT the manufacturing of them uses more resources than the older cars inefficency does.
How do these fkwits get jobs and why do we listen to them ?

That's me stuffed then.... I have a 1995 300ZX Twin Turbo, and 1997 406 3ltr Coupe and a 1998 Subaru Legacy GTB... Chances of them running on Biofuel....slim to none; that is without spending big bucks on the engines.
Darn it, that simply means I'm going to have to buy a V10 M5, Audi RS6 Avant, or a V8 Monaro, VXR8 or Chrysler 300C (with a nice 6.2 V8) :-)
Just out of curiosity, if the fuel is more sustainable, does that mean the price will come down....?

I've been working with aggressive ethanol fuels for many years, they're very common in south america, where you can even get E85 (85% ethanol).
What are the effects? Seals will corrode and leak, including internal o-rings and face seals. Plastic parts will degrade, including fuel lines, parts of the fuel pump and even the fuel tank. Fuel injectors can become clogged, not by the fuel, but by the particles of the corroded rubber and plastic, but the plastic and rubber components of the injectors will also be attacked over time.
Will I be concerned about a 5% rise in Ethanol in my fuel? No. This is a storm in a teacup. It will only be a concern for those trying to maintain classic cars for posterity and I'm sure an additive will arrive to reduce the acidity of the fuel. The rest of us driving around 200k mile sheds will have no more to worry about than we already do with bits falling off our cars because of rust due to road salt and bushes destroyed by pot-holes.

More pain.
Drop the price of fuel for a year first so we can all drive v8's and then do all this eco st. At 21 im worried that ill never be able to afford a nice big v8..
I know how ya feel and I'm 30!, Drop the price of fuel for a year first so we can all drive v8's and then do all this eco st. At 21 im worried that ill never be able to afford a nice big v8..
It seems by the time we're able to buy,run and insure anything really fast, It'll all be gone.
The sole play things of the rich..
Pistonheads really need to rethink it's name. The first car on the list of those damned to repairs from the use of E10 is the Porsche 993 911. If I see one of these every couple of months I'll be amazed. Porsche911heads indeed.
Your car could have gone into limp mode if you've been hearing the ghostly owl of VNT Doom. The PD140 is renowned for the vanes sticking, causing boost problems resulting in the limp mode scenario. Apparently the only way to cure it is to get a new turbo and eliminate the EGR valve. I am sorting my Altea PD140 out next month.

The PD engines can only run on "RME" biofuel iirc. I looked into it when derv hit 100ppl (remember the good times?) and the high pressures and resulting heat break recycled oils used for bio diesel down and wreck the engine. If a second fuel cooler was fitted, only virgin RME could be used.My car was running rough after a few weeks of filling up and recently went in to limp mode. This is not good. I'm only 22 & i'm worried about this make cars like Mk1 MX-5's, E-Type Jags, 1959-2000 Mini's, TVR's Air Cooled 911's & loads of other great cars unuseable & make the roads even more boring.
I keep thinking that these EU guys are just clueless about what's really green & what isn't because in my eyes keeping cars like these on the roads is much better for the enviroment then making those Eco hybrid things like prius's & Electric cars that don't even go as far on an eco run as a Ferrari*!
(*Not proven yet sadly)

I'm new to this, but feel moved to speak. Having driven and owned some lovely old classics like the 205 GTI, Integrale, old MX5s, etc, I'm left a bit cold by the new stuff - recently went out in a fast Megane and it felt a bit sterile. But it looks as though another nail in the coffin is being hammered in, and nostalgic types like me will have to move on or find other interests...shame.
Super unleaded is OK though isn't it? Also, there is an additive which may fend of damage done by the ECO poison: http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-oils-additives-f...
With the use of 10% increasing to 20% of plants plop, does this mean that the cost of fuel at the pump will drop as growing the plants plop must be cheaper than drilling for small pockets of oil??
Another EU beurocratic "GREEN" issue that is being forced onto us, Cameron if you are listening pull out and stay out of the RMS Titanic that is Europe!!
Also has anyone any records or proof that "green" policies although may reduce the CO2 emmissions have been more cost effective, more efficient etc ie the joke about the Toyota Prius being a Green car, the metals for the Batteries are mined in Canada, shipped to Russia put into batteries shipped to Japan to be put into a jelly mould of a car then shipped to the rest of the world to be sold. Life expectancy of approx 9 years before the rather expensive battery packs have to be replaced at a value 3 times the value of a car.
I wonder how many Prius will be on the road in 20 years time against even the ploppiest of cars made 20 years ago like a metro!
Sorry Xmas rant over, to much time on my hands and I do not agree with the Green issues - all a load of male cow pat!!
Merry xmas to everyone on PH.
