- so on top of the 50% rise last time, it's 33.3% this year and a further 25% increase next year...

- makes you proud to be British!!

Don't forget guys 'we' no longer own these despite being built in the main by our vehicle duty licence ( note how clever the government was in changing the term from the road fund licence),

The tolls are run by foreign companies who can manage these sites at a much lower rate than we can ( yea right!), just wait until the government sells off our road system to what ever foreign country wishes to buy them. All our factories and companies including weetabix seem to have gone down this path. Its good for the CEO the FD but not GB inc (rant over)

Looking at the road ministers response he may as well have said lets price them off the road!

Blatant greed from our authorities (and masters)... irked

"These new charges have been met with fury, particularly since the last government pledged to drop tolls once construction costs for the bridge and tunnel were paid off.

The crossing made profit in 2004 – but the charges have remained in place."

Some of the UK's best driving roads. Less than half an hour from Bristol, just that small hurdle of a estuary to get across first though.

I resent paying to get into either Essex or Wales. There should be quarantine conditions set up for the exit

I shall be using the 'hell-crossing' again this weekend, so I'm getting my rant off my chest now -

1) The crossing is debt free - the tolls are just a tax on travelling

2) As any fool do kno, TOLLS SLOW DOWN TRAFFIC, which is bad for the economy and the environment

3) This charade is a poor advertisement for UK PLC - all those foreign visitors kept in queues so they can admire the beauty of Thurrrock or Dartford

4) Scrap the toll booths but put average speed cameras in place to control the flow

What really hacks me off is having to queue in both directions.mad
Why not just double the charge in one direction?.
Straight away you have removed one bottle neck, reduced emissions and saved on operating costs by reducing the number of people required to staff the booths. You will also have happier punters (well in one direction anyway)! All the above with no loss of revenue.

No !!!! you all just paid for it!!! we didnt buy a bolt on her!!!just think??who was stnding next to Tony Blair. When he said "you will be aloud to cross here uninpeaded " now its called "la bridge "so i say once againa As a con sortium which would benefit from a purpose. Baldrick has a cunning plan!! "LETS BUY IT !! you can imagine selling 9 million bonds a £400 a bond walking upto minister of transport and giving him £350.000.000 and in 3yr having a £1000.000.000 go through a consortium in the benefit of the essex and kent people.

Ignoring the fact that the previous post is an unholy mess, the message isn't a bad one.

The councils of Kent and Esses should have been given the right to manage the crossing once it was cash positive.

A simple pricing solution would be to offer electronic tags to all UK registered vehicles at MOT centres for a niminal one off fee. The tag then becomes a visible indicator of an MOT, and can be used for numerous access points accross the UK and is recoded at each MOT annniversary.

All non tagged vehicles pay a fee to use the crossing.

It would be interesting if we had a system whereby "the people" could challenge this toll charge in court. This should be a publicly funded case due to the change of contract that occurred in 2004.
