At the Avis desk the other week I was presented with the keys to my hire car and directed toward the pick up lot. Walking to the car I looked at the keys, noted it was a Ford Mondeo I should look for and with some surprise saw the colour was listed as 'Brown'.

A brown car? I haven't seen one of those since the 1980's Cortina in light brown with a contrasting dark brown vinyl roof. Now I know fashions come and go, but I thought brown cars were still about as trendy as flared trousers!

Luckily, being a hire car, this was a long way from home and since there was no danger of anyone I know actually seeing me drive it I didn't immediately go back to the desk and request a proper colour.

The Mondeo turned out to be a light brown, in fact I go as far as to say pastel in tone. Is pastel worse than brown? The only pastel cars I see are Nissan Micra's and are invariably driven by OAPs.

So are browns and pastels back in car fashion. And are we going to see the re-emergence of banana yellow next??

I've heard brown cars called 'mud' which I'm guessing is taking a cue from Farrow & Ball.
Some of the brown/mud BMWs look ok. In a brown way...

Yep, it seems 'metallic turd' is getting popular. Not seen any car look good in that colour though..

I've been called everything from 'tasteless' to 'mental' with my love for a 'brown' colour option on Porsche 911's. The official colour designation is 'Macademia' - but having seen one in the flesh, yeah, it is basically metallic brown.

But I love it. If I ever get rich enough to own another 911, it will be in this colour. What do you reckon? Lovely, no? cloud9

No, not lovely! It looks a little......, brown.
911s should be 'sharp blue', like the one I had. This was my first car and the one I taught my wife to drive in 20 something years ago. She's doing a hand stand on the beach because she'd just learned how to control the nasty rear end tendency of 1980's 911s

I've seen a few Discoverys in a metallic brown; they look really nice.

Seems to be more popular on the continent. Let's face it, our colour choices are pretty boring here.

obviously driving around with my head in the clouds as I've noticed a lot of brown (and pastel) cars since driving the hire car. I guess they must just not register when they go past. Every time I see one now I say 'yuk' out loud. Mind you this is coming from someone who drives a green car - but hey green is cool.

Well yes, I know what you mean, man in pub says "have you seen X?", "no, no idea, what are you on about?".
Next day ten "X"s. Brown metallic and choccy brown leather been in vogue for a while i reckon. I like 'em.

My Lotus Elise S, new from March. Comes in Sienna Brown with Cocoa Brown leather interior. Well, I like it anyway.

Granted its more bronze than brown but Sepang Bronze metallic from BMW has to be one of my favourite hues!
