"In France, we have long favoured the diesel engine. This was a mistake, and we will progressively undo that, intelligently and pragmatically," Valls said."

If France is serious about Diesel see if Diesel prices at the pumps go up.People only change their way if it cost to much to run a diesel car.

Diesel has been more than petrol for years and years?

Occasionally they are the same, but diesel is normally more.

Never going to happen. The French love their diesels, they're tight as la queue des canards and if they can get 4.5ltr/100km they will. Diesel here is quite a lot cheaper than petrol at ~121€/ltr in supermarkets compared to ~150 for petrol.

The other problem with the French denouncing the diesel is how many cars use their engines now? You will struggle to find a 1.6 or 2.0 mainstream diesel that's not from PSA.

I wouldn't struggle to find many mainstream VAG 2.0l diesels, or Ford, GM, BMW...

Ford is not a good one to pick (PSA 1.6 and 2ltr both used by Ford), VW.... totally crap 1.6 and 2ltr diesels that still pump out too much Nox.....
GM now owned by PSA so you can see their old engines being replaced soon, BMW don't sell anywhere near as many derv's as the PSA group do (plus Ford), so it would be a bit of a loss if they stopped selling diesels.

That said, the modern petrols are far more economical than they use to be, there may be a shift to hybrid petrols if anything, but I doubt that diesels are dead and buried just yet smile

You said "mainstream", not "good". Doesn't get much more mainstream than the ubiquitous VW lumps that have been slotted into various VWs, Audis, SEATs & Skodas (+ a few Mitsubishis) for years.
