As reported in Nikkei (Japanese business publication) here:

Mazda is considering an FR layout fot their next C/D segment car platform. This is their main platform and it accounts for about 70% of sales. Mazda has submitted RFQs (requests for quotations) to multiple parts suppliers assuming new model launch in 2020. Final decision will be made after looking at feedback on RFQs. If the plan is accepted, the first models to likely adopt the new platform will be Atenza (Mazda6 to us) and CX-5. The move to FR is thought as a way to improve brand value and appeal to the customers who appreciate pleasure of driving.

Rear wheel drive has mostly become an attribute of premium (expensive) cars in the last 20 years and I personally would be really excited to see Mazda do this move and offer affordable everyday cars with RWD driving dynamics.
