RE: New Golf R32 promises 247bhp
Discussion
This is going to struggle I think... The competition has caught up since the last R32. I reckon the Focus ST will sort it out on the twisties and wouldn't be far behind on the straights due to the inevitable weight added with the 4wd.
The focus's percieved quality is also much nearer to the VW than it was in the previous incarnations of each model.
Paul.

To be honest, the fit and finish and engineering of the Golf might be better than ever, but the percieved build from what I've seen is pants.
A lad at work got a Tdi 115 Golf V, and a woman has a GT TDi 130 IV, and the IV build is so much nicer.
Things like the way the lights are mounted, and the size and feel of the engineering. Almost like the IV was over-engineered, but the V is almost skimped upon. OK, thats advancing technology and optimising but it just looks so much more flimsy.
The Golf IV Anniversary and R32 looked so classy and solid, percieved AND actual, VW really have lost the plot here. It just looks and feels flimsy and crappy.
The Golf V makes my Pug 306 feel well built and over-engineered!

Sorry mate a good post up until that point !!
But thats HOW bad I think it is. I'm sure the engineering integrity is getting better, but it didn't look DIY at all. Even the old Golf needed massive work to get at the Xenon bulbs did it not?
Ah well, will never be buying one anyway, so why do I care

My 306 *wasn't* well built as it was serviced by wnakers, including Peugeot themselves!
It's better built now I've taken the time and put some TLC into it, and put right the niggly faults and bad workmanship.
The IV Golf looks like it's been over-engineered with not much regard to cost, and from a DIY point of view, the Golf V *looks* over-engineered with cost in high regard.
Time will tell I guess. Still look like a Jelly bean from behind!

I wonder how the price will differ from the 130i
I think I know which one I'd go for, even if it does look like the sills have warped!
I actually quite like looks of the new R32, I thought the old one looked good too, but was perhaps a bit too chav-tastic. Generally opinion of the Golf V in terms of driving enjoyment is that it's significantly better than the Golf IV, so I'd think that the R32 V would be a step up too.

Meh. New golf looks nice as a 5dr, but the three door looks too tall, and topheavy. That silver bit at the front makes it look like they haven't finished painting it. And 300bhp would be nice, though I'm sure 247 is plenty. Hopefully it drives better than it looks, because it looks dissapointing to me.
My new golf would be 5dr 2.0tdi comfortline manual, silver with black leather. Nice enough. Almost got my dad into one but he chickened out and just got the usual Ford Falcon company car.

As its based on the mk5 the chassis/handling should be an improvement over the mk4 R32, however as has been stated im not sure 247bhp is 'enough' when you add in the extra weight of 4wd and the v6 lump. if its only marginally quicker than the GTI then you are paying alot for a nicer noise and styling tweaks.

And now, they are looked up on as the godsend of hatches.. How ignorant people were in 2006
Err...no they really aren't. A decent gt car with little sportiness about it. They are too heavy and too slow. A focus ST which was much cheaper when new is now comparable price wise. The ones that are looked on well such as the mk1 and mk2 focus RS, Clio v6 abd even to some extent Alfa 147 GTA have held their noney well as they are sought after. These have not and are not. The mk4 R32 has done much better and looks better.
