Seems a bit odd; the chassis is tightened up but a softer engine fitted. Hardly seems like a step forward. Is the W12 too expensive to make, and this a cost cutting exercise? I can't see anyone considering this the new "flagship" of the range when the W12 makes it look feeble.

Its expensive and v. heavy.

Probably contributes a significant portion of the Continental gt's 2800kg weight.

Yes, the case was the same for the old A8 - top model has a W12 6.0 but the sportier S8 had a V8, less weight and better handling (though actually less power). The W12 was more of a limo.

Bit like the S55 AMG versus the S600 V12.

Bit like the E34 BMW 540i (V8) versus the straight six M5.

See choice is good!
Don't point out to VW it's pointless! Someone probably pointed out a new Corrado would be pointless when there's the Audi TT, and that's why we don't have that.. but it doesn't make anything better for us the consumers!

Sounds impressive and sure it will go (very) well, but I don't understand everyone liking the looks...its bland, bland, bland. No flair, no style. I'll take a Maserati Quattroporte or Mercedes CLS instead please...

Not to mention, further diluting the Lambo brand...

An Audi with a Lambo engine . . . what's next: a Lambo with an Audi engine?

They sure've put down a winner here: who won't have one . . . The A8 is the better looking luxo barge. I guess the M5 has a shadow now.

'Lambo gets Lambo powerplant', V12in a nice Espada kind of thingy please.

Lambo engine, Audi engine...
Bah humbug...

They are abusing the Lambo brand now IMO.

Here's the press release: www.autoindex.org/news.plt?no=1253#

Doesn't mention price. I guess we'll have to wait for that one.

By the way, to all those saying a Lambo engine in an Audi devalues Lamborghini, did you say the same of Ferrari when the Lancia Thema 8.32 came out?

Whoa....hang on lads, seems a lot of negatives here about Audi engines.Don't remember too many Lambos winning Le Mans recently....but I do seem to remember a certain car called an R8 ?
So before we all pan Audi engine design lets cast the net a bit wider

Audi makes great cars, great engines and have upgraded their name last decades . . . Lamborghini is a legendary name and that's something Audi's got to achieve yet. They try that by dropping the V10 in an A8 Nah, they just made a Merc owner feel silly. This is the new Autobahn king for CEO's.

Good to see audi rejoin this sector, but the car's nowhere near powerful enough, as mentioned it will cost prob £80ish before speccing, they'llneed to charge this as the production costs on this car with that fancy engine must be high .

This means it's up against the outgoing S55 493bhp (new one 517bhp and even better ?) and the Alpina B7 493bhp (but it has more) are both very good and both will pull 4.7 0-60 and get to 100 in 10 secs, the merc will hit 195 unlimited and the Alpina 186.

I test drove an A8 w12 sport, the b7 and had an s55 both the alpina and the merc do the luxury car thing better and were a bit better to drive (the alpina being the best drivers car).

I can't see Audi managing to make it work as they need to make it both a better luxury car and a better driver's car to compete, but nice to have the choice though, new version of Rhonin needed to show it in it's best light .

The production cost will not be that much higher than the V8 as it comes off the same production line as the current V8's and V10. This promises to be a much more focused drive than the W12 limo. The price I agree is baffling. As a full spec 4.2 is running at 110,000€ (in the UK) yet this is priced at 96,700€ according to the press release I have!!!!!! Either the bargain of the decade or they have got it wrong. Of course in the US a full spec A8 4.2 is 80,000€ .....

When comparing the S8 to a Merc you should consider that the S500 is priced at the same level and has only 306hp.

Ah, so the headline should read 'Audi engine in an Audi' then.

Bit of a non-story really. Perhaps they should stick to what they do best. Maybe Lambo could then get back to what they do best.

Dont want to start an argument ,but it was an Audi designed who penned the Murcielago....and a lot of the 4wd technical expertise was Audi input too....dont confuse a blurring of the lines with a cheapening of the product.Sometimes,a fresh approach can reap big rewards IMHO this is a case in point.......just a personal opinion you understand,Im sure others, yourself included it would seem, will disagree

Nice. Hasn't got a thing on the next-gen C63 AMG in terms of the German uber-limo makers quest to shove the biggest engine into the smallest possible engine bay. Talking of RS8, would Audi use a TT version of this motor, or would they bother fitting a Murcie V12? I could just imagine a bunch of German engineers sweating profusely trying to fit it in!!!

When you start to compare Audi with Merc you should consider that Audi have Lambo and Bentley as the super upmarket product. I my opinion Lambo's at the moment are fantastic. Great styling, great quality of fit and finish and engine although I am lead to understand clutchs are short lived. Although compared too the running cost of a 360 or 550 I doubt the Lambo's are that expensive to live with.

When you consider a lot of people just do not want a Merc. A8's are a great altenative. If you want something a little more special then there is the Bentley. Then again if you want to be completely nuts perhaps a Lambo!

To me they seem to have covered all the bases. Value for money compared to Merc, Exclusivity for Bentley and out right performance from Lambo.

And what a collection that would make.
An S8 for work
A Bentley for the weekends
A Lambo for going to Le Mans.........
