Let me see, this or a Focus ST2 for £500 less (or £2500 less for the basic ST!)? Someone at Toyota needs their head examining.

A 26bhp gain?!?
Surely more than that available. Me thinks a remap and a big IC may be the order of the day.

Did they not lose some of the VVTi when bolting the blower on?

I would have thought this engine in either the celica, which is supposed to be pretty good already, or even better, the mr2, where they could have potentially one of the best drivers cars out there with the performance to scare the odd M3.......!!!

Agreed, but the Celica is dead (discontinued after 30 odd years) and the 2ZZ (189bhp) lump slots straight into the MR2 and yet they haven't fitted it.

No, I don't know why either. A 189bhp revvy Mk3 MR2 sounds like fun to me.

Right where do I start.....

I drive a corolla t-sport, the 189 bhp car that has he celica 190 engine.

I cannot deny that its not a civic type R, or leon cupra, (my last car), and it handles like a jelly, but it has a beautiful engine note like a screaming cat.

It also needs 17" alloys, about 2" taken off the suspension, and an engine re-map, and the handling is set for a spirited drive not a high performance drive.

My girlfriend thinks the handling is great, nuff said.

The ingredients do not match up to the car it should be faster for 189 bhp, but if you dont want a track car, its alright.

Its quieter than a type R and its far better built, and more economical, by 6-7 mpg, i had one for a week.

I tried a celica t sport, and it felt cheaply built, compared to the corolla, although the corolla needs the short throw gearstick, from the celica.

In response to the value for money issue, the toyota will be going far longer then the focus, but I grant you its more expensive.

I think it looks great, but yes should have been sharper in terms of performance.

And by the way on my company car scheme it costs me £22 per month.

Supercharging is not about peak power. (Big IC on small engine sounds like big lag to me as well...)

OTOH not quite sure what this car IS about, having read the rest of the thread

Toyota have been losing the plot for bloody years, their high performance range is nothing like it was 5-10 years ago, the Celica GT4 was canned in the mid-late nineties, the MR2T died in 1999/2000, and the Supra was phased out from 1996-2002. The celica 190 isn't really a replacemnt of the GT4, the mk3 MR2 is nothing like a mk2 MR2T, and we are still waiting for a proper Supra replacemnt.[/quote]

It doesn't seem to be affecting their sales performance though Gaz

'Performance' cars for large manufacturers are niche products. Add the import costs of bringing them into the UK (this is what killed the Supra) and it makes no financial sense.

That said, don't write them off just yet - capiche

I imagine the idea is that they are handing the plot over to Lexus, rather than losing it...?

Not really, Lexus now have a plot all of their own

Toyota fitted a small MP45 supercharger to the 2ZZ engine. In an Elise it makes 220HP. there is very little to be gained even with smaller pulleys and charge cooling. This supercharger is maxxed out.
Fitting the same engine with an MP62 supercharger as in the Exige models pushes HP up to about 260-270HP using proper charge cooling.
The Lotus needs upgraded injectors and fuel pumps for this.
To get to 300HP, you still can use the engine as is and add a TVS1320 supercharger or a Rotrex unit.
Beyond 300HP then engine is still fine, unopened, but the gear box 2nd and 3rd gear are weak points.
You need to upgrade them.

So to get to a 260HP Corolla is not that much effort.

Bloody hell!

I had one of these, brilliant build quality, that was it.

Crap handling...

Crap fuel economy...

Wooly gearchange...

And then there was the Fuel Economy, approx 28Mpg at a steady 70 on a long run.

To this day I am convinced there was an issue with the changeover point with the ECU, it just never felt right! 215BHP my @rse!

I don't think this car deserves to get such a bad wrap.My brother owns one of these, bought it from our local Toyota dealership as an ex-demo with 2500 on the clock for 12.5k.

Really well built car, inside and out (interior in particular with this edition is very nice)

Eibach -15mm lower springs fitted as standard with limited edition 17" alloys....Nice but the car doesn't handle as well as it could. Did a trackday at Goodwood with it a couple of years back, and although it happily overtook old 911's and e30 m3's (damp track) really doesn't do the engine justice.

Engine is great, sounds nice, and fitted with an aftermarket air filter it whines..alot! VVtl-i has been brought down to come in at 5.5k all the way to 8k. Has good mid range power to play with. It will put its nose in front of an ep3 in a straight line. Could do with an lsd though! The blower really pulls it through lower down the revs and the vvtl-i keeps it going, its best of both worlds, with good linear power. As a result it doesn't take a while to get going like unlike something like an EP3.

There was a performance package offered by 'Silverstone performance' who offered a smaller pulley, remap, air filter and some other bits to take it to 240bhp. But that would have just made the problems worse.

Great daily car though. looks/sounds nice and petrol isn't that bad, around high 20's combined. Only due to the blower and the fact you are advised to only run V-power.

He's looking to sell it in the near future, I will put a link up here if/when he does.
