Although this isn't directly aimed at cars I thought you ought to know about it.

Michael Meacher wanted to ban Motorcycles from National Parks for no reason other that he thought that they were a "problem". Upon discovering that he couldn't do that he has instructed the police to persecute bikers in these areas. When questioned by MCN his department has retorted "Like it or Lump it". Full story at www.motorcyclenews.com/news/detail?sectionID=212131&documentID=132159

If he is allowed to get away with this type of thing, where will it all end?

My list of Labour MPs who will be first up against the wall come the revolution is growing at a rate of knots!

It is unbelievable, and it does affect us sports car drivers as well. ie first it will be bikes then sports cars using the same reasons (ie noisy, too fast etc.)

This is absolutely unbelievable.

This man (Meacher) needs to be removed from any form of power...let alone government. PHers will have already guessed my political persuasion and stuff like this just reinforces it.

Today they persecute bikers. Next it'll be drivers. Then it could be people of some particular race or religious persuasion. Then people of the opposite political view and finally then just people they don't like for some random reason.

Sure if there really WAS some general problem some reasonable regulation of vehicles in National Parks might be justified. But who on earth has been complaining that there is a problem? I haven't seen one. And I go to National Parks as much most people...

Ah thats it. Perhaps I'm part of the problem - nasty people in their open-top sports cars actually enjoying the countryside and its roads. I see!

Pah!

This Meacher fellow wouldn't be the same Mr Meacher who just a few years ago wanted to ban city people from buying second homes in the country would it?
He lost that one when it turned out that he already had a couple of extra houses of his own.
Typical of this Govt though and very very frightening when you think how his mind must work (and the minds of the rest of them for that matter)
This country gets more like Animal Farm every day Blair is in power.
Anyway, easy answer for you biker fellows is to club together and give the Labour party a quick £125k bung. That should sort the matter nicely to your satisfaction

We *must* all write to this guy expressing our anger at his totalitarian aims and the underhanded methods he uses to achieve them.

What possible reason can there be for victimising bikers when the Department of Transport want to promote motorcycle use??

This man is clearly a self righteous, egregious little P***k and he needs some letters telling him so, and telling the press so.

oh and don't forget to fax your MP about this at www.faxyourmp.co.uk - DO IT NOW!!

MMmmm... yet another case of Blair and his band of socially inept sh1tmonkeys eroding civil liberties. I'd love to see an Irish TD (MP) try a stunt like that, there'd be civil war. FIGHT THE POWER !!!

I think we should suggest that Mr Meacher move to somewhere they have a fascist dictatorship instead of democracy - as that is obviously significantly closer to his method of governing.

What a complete w**ker. I somehow doubt he will get away with this one...as the guy on MCN said...he should automatically be fired for this blatant mis-use of authority.

Right, I've faxed my MP and I've written a letter to that scumbag Meacher
quote:
Not only do you and your department take a high-minded view against a significant proportion of the motoring public, you do so without being prepared to produce any evidence as to why.

It seems less and less significant that we live in an allegedly democratic society when those empowered to work on our behalf take it upon themselves to wage an un-democratic war against members of the electorate. This is arrogance beyond the pale.

quote:
Is it not time that you put your arguably unsound environmental dogma to one side and started using your powers in a more productive and realistic way?
And I don't even ride a bloody motorbike! I hope Mel and Carl will be joining in..

Normally, the real tin-pot dictators like to hide behind some kind of 'Peoples Republic' smoke screen.

Why do they feel the need to be so very interventionalist? Is this really the kind of spirit that made our country what is (once was?), and what happened to the notion of protecting minority interests (e.g. bikers)?

Though this might not exactly be comparing like with like, I think there's a parallel to be drawn between the attempts to ban fox-hunting, the banning of hand-guns and attempts to ban us from various such motoring pursuits.

It's a group of interfering pseudo-liberals hell-bent on banning stuff which harms no-one and brings joy to a lot of individuals. In so doing, they occupy some notional high-ground making themselves feel important and influential whilst pissing some people off and without actually making life better for anyone. Tossers.

Good Man, Ted..

FWIW, I always consider that you're doing plenty for the cause simply by running your site, since it's a forum in which we learn (and share ideas) about these issues.. so well done, mate! Long may it continue....

I am f**king steaming about this one... and I don't even live there anymore! F**K!

I love the faxourmp site. I've just sent this:

quote:

Dear Mr Phil Willis,

It has come to my attention that Environment Minister Michael Meacher has tried to ban Motorcycles from national parks. On finding that he was unable to do that I understand that he has written to top policemen around this country to ask them to clamp down on motorcycles.

This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable, and reminds me more of the behavior in animal farm than that I would expect from an MP let alone a Minister. I do not ride a Motorcycle, but I do believe that motorcycles are more environmentally friendly than cars. They use less petrol, and less space on the roads.

This kind of behavior is another example of why I am seriously considering permanently moving to the USA. (I currently work there.) It is the complete antithesis of the freedom that the UK used to have and lead the world in. This freedom should be treasured to allow people to live and enjoy life in the UK.

I ask that you pass onto Michael Meacher my disappointment in his activities, and please remember that any regulations that affect our civil liberties and freedoms should be very carefully considered before they are adopted. There are very few things more important than our freedoms.

Thank you for your time.

Steve Warwick

If you all didn't vote for the bastards you wouldn't have to moan about them, would you? Ye Gods.

Next time why don't you all vote for a more vehicle friendly party? Sheesh.

I didn't vote for the bastards. Never will, either. The thing is, they'll get in again at the next election because the other lot (soon to be third party) are hell-bent on making themselves utterly unelectable. We already appear to be gaining a 'first lady', just wait 'till he changes his job description to President. Then he'll ban elections because the electorate "isn't capable of making decisions and we must do what's best for it"... Dictatorship is creeping up on us, so let's hope the other 55% of the population actually vote at the next election before it's too late...

But enough, already. Wasn't it Meacher who that chap on Channel 4 (Mark Thomas?) exposed about 12 months ago for the multi-house thing?

Bl**dy good link that, fax now awaiting my MP in the morning (probably in the bar now with his secretary!!)
Quick extraction of my post, not too right/left wing I hope

I believe that this will effectively be persecution of one section of the community and a serious errotion of civil liberties. All on the personal whim and petulence of a man that has not got his own way through the proper democratic channels. This is I believe one step short of the actions of an unelected dictatorship.
It also borders on an abuse of his powers as an elected Member of Parliment and as such I request that you bring him to task on this matter.
(Please note I am not a Motorcyclist myself).

Well he is an opposition MP so at least he has now got something to say..
