The grammar in both paragraphs is deplorable.

What a basic misuse of 'which' for 'that' and the 'n-dash' for 'm-dash'.

He must have attended a state-funded school

I removed my name & address from it for the sake of privacy from lurkers.. Okay - my name can be found out quite easily, but my address is a bit more sacred..

standard letter it might be - but if it is, it's a particularly crap one..

Actually it reads really well! If you just imagine it being spoken by John Le Mesurier (Sgt Wilson, Dads Army) you will see what I mean!

"Now gather round men"

"Mr Meacher, er... ...could I be excused?"

"Mr Meacher, my mum won't be very happy if you make me go out there without a scarf on."

"Stupid boy..........."

Oh yes, I see what you mean - we're not being run by a government at all. We've been caught up in a re-run of lost version of "Dad's Army"...........

T'would be funny if it didn't seem so close to the truth

What can some snivil servant bury this under???

The Government have officially responded by saying that the letter to Chief Constables was "misunderstood".

Well I'm sorry but that's not good enough
Nothing short of an official retraction and apology should do.

I know someone suggested a Dad's Army connection, but I thought it read like the kind of pidgin English you get in instruction manuals for cheap Asian goods. Perhaps he has a (illegally immirgated) Phillipino secretary.

I was half expecting the letter to end, "me love you long time. Your MP"!

Yep sent Ms Julia Drown MP a fax.
She is a typical Blair Babe so about as likely to move away from the Party line as she is to learn to walk on water.
The question is will she even bother to reply?

Had a quick look through the MCN stuff.

It appears the 'evidence' now being cited for this fiasco is in fact 2 newspaper stories.

That this is the best they can come up with totally stuns me. Afterall we all know that all articles in rags like those mentioned are fair and unbiased, not pandering to the 'chattering classes' (as so often mentioned here).

Government policy decisions from reading the paper over breakfast?

aaaarrrrrrrrggghhhhh

Well, here was my reply from Monica....
Not sure it'll ever get to Meacher.
Atleast I tried !!

quote:

Your email to Michael Meacher has been passed to him at his office in the
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) Nobel House, 17
Smith Square, London SW1P 3JR, 020 7238 6000, where it will be dealt with in
his capacity as Minister of State for the Environment.

Here, at Mr Meacher's House of Commons office, we do not handle matters
arising from his responsibilities as Environment Minister, only his
responsibilities as the Labour MP for Oldham West & Royton.
