WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!!

privatisation will ONLY work if there is competition. But this would be a monopoly supplier - so it won't.

Not quite ... point I was making was that it could at least be sustainable, i.e. it wouldn't go bust. I'm not saying for one moment that it is sensible, or will deliver better, cheaper or safer roads. The problem with monopolies is that they can screw the customer, not that they are not economically viable.

It is also worth bearing in mind that there are developing countries that have gone down the route (boom boom) of allowing the private sector to build and operate motorway networks becasue the State is genuinely too strapped to fund them themselves. These roads are in limited competition with other roads, air transport and rail systems. Again, this system may not be perfect, but it seems to work reasonably well.

Read a comment in the paper yesterday that the charge would come in when you dropped below the speed limit and were therefore in traffic, but that traffic caused by accidents or roadworks would be exempt.

Now I'm sure they've thought this through carefully, but....

This means if we do 55 in a 60 limit we're in traffic, if we do 61 in a 60 we're gatso'd, fined, flogged and forced to drive a Carina - so imagine all the numpties dead on 59.75 mph refusing to slow down or speed up - ahh thats ok then all traffic will have an accident in it - nothing will move.

How will they monitor when an accident or roadworks is the cause? How far away do they need to be - 50m, 100m or 10 miles?

What's the chance of this working? Bugger all, that's what.

eeek. I thought that they told us "speed limits are not a target speed" ????! if this doesn't force people to drive "to the limit", what else will? totally unsafe proposition, I am surprised the T2000 people haven't had a go about it.

If the road system uis privatised, how long before the private operators are given licenses to run their own speed capture system to collect revenue to support the infrastructure?

Nice.

It's too much to expect the government to learn by its mistakes, there are just too many of them. Fortunately the natural curve of a poitician's career once the media have got their teeth in means that Mr. Byers will be shunted aside before too long. However, the establishment will ensure that he continues to shuffle along the political seabed, still with influence and an income. Right next to Mandleson.

Bah, I'm on a rant now. Better go and review my track day bookings for this year.
