quote:
Tracey Ehlers, 18, drove off in a pal’s Citroen Saxo after a night out with school friends, it was claimed.
But she had never had a driving lesson or even sat at the wheel of a car before, the court heard.
Not drink or drugs as far as I know.
Rather a (tragic) combination of long straight narrow country lane, followed by a deceptively tricky bend, and two inconvenientely placed very large trees.
Not the first nasty accident at the point I am told by the son of the landowner. (mainly due to the trees I guess - they always win)
Just to expand on the story published in the Sun, the local paper reports that the parents of the girls killed are of the opinion that the driver has been punished enough, and are not in favour of a custodial sentence.
I don't know if I would feel the same way, but then its easy to judge, and I would think most have us did things when we were young (and foolish) that could have ended as badly...
Cheers, Fil

Maybe you missed my point (or maybe I didn't make it very well)...
what's bugging me is what made her take the car out in the first place? No clue, never driven before and people in the car.. doesn't add up without intoxicants.. unless she's part of a joyriding clique or something.. I don't get it..
And the parents of those killed must be a lot more philosophical than most - respect is due.

Carzee - I see what you mean...
I wonder if it was just one of those things that seemed like a good idea at the time (I dare you/good laugh/who can it hurt/etc), that went horribly wrong.
My facts may be totally wrong but it is a rural area (although close to Nottingham) and I think one (or more) of the families is into farming/agricultural machinery, so she may have driven vehicles before?.
I get the impression the girls were of 'good character'.
I should point out that although my fiancee works with some of their mates, and future FinL vagely knows the family, most of the above is conjecture.

There's been a very similar incident on my patch recently, 3 lads, one girl, Saxo, on their way home from the pub (Hmmmm....). Girl has no licence, drove her friends car, lads all not using seatbelts. She lost control on a downhill sweep with a bit of a bend, and hit a tree and stone wall, at which point the car must have been four feet off the floor, as only the top of the wall was damaged. One death, 2 very seriously injured, and the girl? - cuts and bruises only. Speed cameras? Traffic police? Waste of public money!
Just goes to prove that "stupidity kills", and should be the buzz word, and not 'speed kills'.
As McNab points out - it will be a terrible thing to live with. I know this feeling to a tiny degree, after my mate crashed into a field - I felt guilty that he lost control trying to keep up with me.
Imagine how bad you'd feel if it was you behind the wheel? yeah, that IS punishment enough.

People on here make me sick! You are quick to judge, not knowing the facts about what happened on the awful night. I know and I know that the girl driving was one of 3 that were driving that night, which it clearly says in the police statements! You sad people that make comments like 'you stupid bh' are worthless trolls that do not have a clue! The parents of the girls that were tragically taken from them are clearly able to forgive, so what right does that give the rest of you scum to judge! None of you were involved in this tragedy and do not have to witness what this girl goes through everyday of what's left of her life, just think about that in future! Maybe you should concentrate on your own life's them hiding behind a computer screen 😔
