thanks gazzab, have been in hospital since sunday morning. Ended up cracking the c7 vert in my neck. they did xrays ct scans and mri. doc gave me a full upper body brace instead of halo [thank god]. so i just have another scan today to make sure everything is properly supported and i should be out and about. will sorn the cerb until i'm fit enough to fix her up.

My son nearly 'lost' his C2 'peg' (!) when he was 1 yr old due to a medical issue so am familiar with the issues and angst that goes with this.

Going to get the blown gearbox out on the ground so I can drop it off to be repaired next week. I'm hoping it will only take the rest of the day to get it out, but I've given myself the weekend to get it done.

Managed to get the car up on four axle stands and got the chassis cradle and exhaust off today.
Took me ages to jack the car up though, front was easy enough but the rear took a while as I couldn't get the jack under a rear centre point.
Will have another look at it tomorrow.
Does anyone know if it's possible to remove the gearbox while leaving the bellhousing and heat shield in situ?
If the heat shield has to be removed, do I have to drill out the rivets?

You can leave the bell housing in place but the heat shield has to go, and yes, just drill out the rivets. I find a single cut countersink bit like this works best. Remove the gear lever and rear mount & rubbers, undo 4 M12 cap head bolts to separate the box from the bell housing. Then slide the box backwards and turn it over and it will clear the end of the exhaust manifolds and come out behind them. Glad you are on the mend!!!
