Happy days.

The Cerbera is back up and running following a morning of fitting my new battery. I went for the Bosch in the end and whilst it is a tight fit I managed to get all the wires and panels back into place without too much aggression!

Thanks for all your advice.

I should have read this thread more thoroughly, but just saw quite a few people saying Bosch so got that, wish I hadn’t now. banghead

I did have a 072 type before which was a perfect fit, I’ve struggled with badly fitting battery’s before so went to quite a bit of trouble last time to find the 072.

As stated earlier the bosch won’t fit with the standard base plate. I tried cutting the lower mounting tab off the back of the battery so it would push in further, it did, but still not enough for my taste. With the holes in the mounting plate elongated the plate would move out enough to clamp the battery. So it was looking good, but the scuttle panel is just too tight for my taste. Also it pushes everything too close to the exhaust manifold. I think part of the Cerbs battery eating is down to the battery getting supper headed by the exhaust manifold, so I’m going to add some heat shielding to it, having a smaller battery will help there too, so I think I’ll go with a Yellow top. Mainly because I’d like to be able to leave it for a few weeks & just go out & have it start without messing about with chargers. Then if I do leave it too long & it does go flat I can charge it up from flat without worrying I’ve killed the battery

I do have one question though:

Will the Yellow top terminals still poke out though the hole in the scuttle panel?

Just in the pics they look to be more centrally placed on the top of the battery.

You're running a risk expecting it to start after a couple of weeks without charge. Letting a battery run down doesn't do much for its life either.

Get an accumate and buy the attachment that means you can charge it through the cig lighter, saves the faff of getting the allen keys out and removing the slam panel each time you charge. Just go easy on plugging it in and pulling it out as the whole thing has a habit of falling to pieces :-)

If you trim the body of the ciggy lighter down, it allows you to screw it back in using more of the threads on the mounting part, they weren’t intended to be used on thick fiberglass, mine is very firmly mounted now.

The slam panel should have a hole in it to let you connect charger / jump leads up to the +ve terminal of the battery, that’s part of the reason for needing to have a battery that fits properly, also the reason for my question above. My 98 has a hole at least, if yours hasn't later cars, or perhaps speed 6’s may not have one I guess.

I wouldn't worry about leaving a Cerb all locked up and alarmed for a month or more with a Yellow Top installed.
The yellow top is a deep cycle battery, so by design it is intended to run flat time & time again. Hopefully though going from what jammy says it won’t got flat at all though!

I’ve taken out the clock & finally fitted the group buy oil temp gauge, so that is on less thing draining the battery.

The optima battery range have a very low internal resistance so don’t flatten themselves as much as normal battery’s that also helps them last longer without charging.

There only one way to tell though - fit it & see

Also the yellow top should match the car better smile

Sorry Luckyone, can't answer your question regarding the terminal lining up with the hole in the scuttle panel as my battery currently isn't in the TVR. However I believe the terminals are in the same positions on both the Red Top and Yellow Top so hopefully anyone with an Optima will be able to answer your question.

I have a RedTop (it's superb) but it is substantially smaller than a 072. The positive terminal is just about accessible but it depends how you pad out the the battery shelf as it needs a little bit of help to stop moving around, I have used an old piece of rubber door seal.

Ah excellent, thanks, I was worried they were so far in they would be totally inaccessible. I was hoping I could pad it in the right direction too smile

With any luck I won’t need to get to them...

I've decided to go for type 077 Varta Silver

Voltage: 12 Volts
Capacity: 63 Ah
CCA: 610 A
Technology: Wet (MF)
Length: 242 mm
Width: 175 mm
Height inc. terms: 190 mm
Weight: 14.78 Kg

Same size as my current battery, but with the terminals the right way round and higher CCA. Tayna are asking £62 plus £8 shipping, but hopefully I'll be able to find somewhere locally who will match the price.

Here is my battery...

Slightly off topic but can anyone tell me what the small red wire is connected to to live terminal? It also has a fuse holder similar to the 100amp fuse... Does everyone have this?

Not standard so I would guess it is for a sub/amp or something similar.

No sub/amp or anything of the kind... It's not a problem, just curiosity.

Would wire of that gauge take 100 Amps without melting?

Why is it in the footwell? phenomenal power discharge from lithium but rather expensive.

That would melt like a Welli boot in a Furness.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Starter-Battery-50Ah-Opt...

I ordered it at 2:30pm and it was with me 9am the next day!! Gone down in price as well I paid £149

Easy to fit in the Cerb, you will just need a little bit of padding to stop it moving around, I used an old piece of door seal which was perfect.

You will notice the difference straight way, my Speed6 turns like a turbo! on the the starter
