Are Optima as good as their reputation still? Heard before they were suffering quality issues, but this was a while ago..

I hope so - I've got a brand new one sat on my desk here in it's box to fit!

I went for the same one linked above - the 4.2 RTS 50Ahr 815CCA model. Hope it fits!

I think so - it's still in its box. It's supposed to be!

I'll hopefully get it fitted tonight, unless the weather turns (again) before home-time. It'll be nice to take the car out and be able to stop the engine without having to borrow electricity to start it again laugh

Well it's fitted. The battery is smaller but the way I have the cables routed makes the scuttle panel even tighter than before. I'll need to fiddle with that. The battery is smaller than the whole so as mentioned by another user it needs padded with something. It cranks over nicely but I've got my flashing indicators still until it was alarmed and disarmed again. So far, so good. The Bosch battery that came out was 74Ahr so I'm going to need to drive more regularly until I've moved house and can condition charge it.

How long should an Optima Red top last? I bought mine about 4 years ago and it's been great until now. I don't use my car much over winter but still try to take it for a run every couple of weeks. I have an accumate but I don't leave it on all the time as I found that the maintaining light never comes on and I was worried it might overcharge the battery, I also found that every time I left it on charge for more than 24hrs all of the electrics would die and the only way I could bring it back to life was to disconnect the battery then reconnect it. Now I can't seem to charge the battery enough to start it and have to jump start it, even after a long run the car won't restart when I turn it off. Should a Red top last longer than 4 years or does it sound like my accumate is faulty and has killed the battery or is it my fault for not using the car enough and letting the battery drain? Not sure whether to buy another red top or go for something else. Also how can I test my accumate is working correctly?

Check the big fuse, it is directly between the alternator and battery in the charging circuit. Its situated at the rear of the engine in the V. My Red Top is 6 years old and still going strong.

Sorry to bump this old thread but I am having issues starting, thought I would start with something obvious. I wonder how long these last as mine was last replaced late 2008.

Well I started this thread 2 years ago - and last week I walked into the garage and pressed the button after 5 months of hibernation and she turned over and started no worries.

Thumbs up to RedTop from me

Does anybody know if it is Part Number/Size 075 or 0753? I have had problems before with it actually fitting. Thanks.

My battery failed last week, used it all day started fine in the morning, all day use to silverstone even moved it a couple of times, stopped 20 miles down the road for an hour in the evening, went to go home dead!
072 battery £46.00 all is well again.
Never known a battery fail so fast before, was about 4 years old, but I was guessing bad earth or connection at the time...

If you are going for 075 size, get the Varta silver 078 the terminals are the right way around.

Slightly off-topic but I understand that the fuel pump doesn't require much power from the battery, is this right?

I've just bought a new battery This post isn't to clear on exactly which battery fits the Cerb, so I went for the 086. Picked it up from 'The Battery Warehouse' in Grimsby - free delivery to anywhere in the UK smile. And it fits perfectly, it's tight, and you'll need to remove the battery retaining clamp thing, but it's perfect.
I had a chat with the guys there who are battery geeks, and they explained that the layout and size restrictions for the Cerb mean you are very limited in choice of brands for the 086, and have to go for a 'budget' make, but they assured me that it's a decent battery, and comes with a 3 year guarantee, so you can't go wrong.
I asked them about trickle charging, and they said don't bother, if you don't use the car very often, a charge every month from a bog standard charger is the best way to keep the battery in good condition.
