GoPro, YouTube and no idea!

The idea was to set up a YouTube channel and post my GoPro footage of what life's like using a Cerbera as a daily driver.

I've very quickly established that

a, I'm not a very good camera man
b, I'm not very good at video editing
c, I'm scared to do commentary
d, My video's are very boring.

Apart from stop doing it and wasting my time, what advice can you bring and what sort of stuff would you be interested in viewing?

I'm going to try and cross off each of those points above, starting with the editing. The boxed editing software for GoPro is a bit fiddly, so I'm going to try Sony Vegas next.

Today - I'm going to try commentary!

At the moment, I've got checking oil, fueling and washing it. To keep this on topic for the Cerbera forum, what sort of stuff would a prospective new purchaser want to see?

Hi Byff,

I had intended to watch your channel videos last night when I got home but ended up changing parking sensors and washing a car instead.

A video format buyers guide might be handy, although I suspect you might want an assistant to help. Written words can be dry sometimes and some people struggle to take them in, or interpret what they've read. Even visualising what parts of the car they're reading about can challenge and dilute the message. I'm ok reading myself, but not everyone is.

It may be handy for newcomers to provide a tour of the car pointing out what to check when buying - e.g. point out where the chassis outriggers tend to corrode above the corner gusset plates and stuff like that. You could record the start-up showing what's supposed to beep and light-up when. Point out where hydraulic oil may be weeping from dodgy clutch slave seals, where fuel hoses tend to perish and split and so on. Just a suggestion?

Never really been on to watch many/any vlogs, or even regularly read particular blogs - so when I do it's usually a good one.

The only vlog that I currently watch almost religiously is Baron Von Grumble. Watched his green laning video ages ago and been hooked ever since.

Might be worth looking at his vids and trying to pick up some tips. Don't be too disheartened by his production values however, he runs a video production company! Might also be worth contacting him to get some tips?

Its all about practice, try moving the camera around and get loads of different angles/ views.

Yes

Start with a story board, it may sound stupid but it is what the professionals do.

Don't give up if it's something you want to do, I've done a few bits but it takes up loads of time to do it properly.

If you have any technical questions just ask and you will get loads of advice

You have only done 4 videos, you will get used to the style you like and trying different things.
Would be interesting to see a walk round of the car, or fixes to issues you have solved, having a tvr im sure you have your fair share

What about a drive by, video from another car, nice roads you have visited (like a tour guide in a cerbera)

try loads of things, thats what youtube is designed for

I like his style, like the introduction theme - some top tips there. Going to try and steer clear of it just being a vlog and keep it centered on the car and not my personality.

Are you filming at 1080? Sure I remember reading that you get a much smoother video with the gopro at 720p?

yeah, 1080p 48fps.

Is it jerky for you? Seems to run smooth on my ipad but I'm still experimenting really, render settings etc etc. I had it rendered in one format that when I tried to upload it, was going to take 3 days! Went for the internet 1080p settings to get it down to 30mins.

I still hate the sound of my own voice, but had to reference Baron von Grumble after he was mentioned earlier.

Not that I'm an expert but that was a viewing pleasure to see , and good to see a new cerb video, i must have seen them all !

Not jerky, just when you went for the overtake towards the end. The frame rate made it look less smooth. Or at least it did on my laptop.

If you've got the Black Edition or newer Plus, you could go for 1080p60 or even 720p120 to get a much smoother video. At the same time it looks a bit less film-like and more artificial. Still prfer the higher framerate though. The video looks more crisp in my eyes.

Remember, that the big picture is traditionally 24 frames per second. It's the bare minimum to fool the eyes/brain, that you're watching avideo, not a slideshow. ;-)
With 48p I had trouble on some devices like USB- or network playback on the TV. With 1080p60 however some tablets might get choppy playback because of insufficient rendering capacity.

So in my Book, I'd always go for 1080p on the GoPro in either 30p or 60p. And I'd never convert from one framerate to another, as you will automatically get choppy playback unless you go from 30<=>60, 25<=>50 or 24<=>48 frames per second.
