The car in the photo stood at Barnet TVR for at least 2 years until their demise - it was then bought by Castle TVR and stood there for a year before Tomej bought the car in approx 2011/2.

Car devloped a head gasket problem about six months into his ownership and he decided to move on - it then appeared at the dealer in Kent/Essex.

Barnet bought the car from a chap who used to live in Leighton Buzzard area and it was serviced there by a garage that I had never heard of.

When I saw the car at Castle it had not had a rebuild.

Cosmetically the car was superb incl. a very clean chassis.

As I said earlier I'd carefully check the front near side. In the pic it looks repaired (to me).

I've phoned the sellers and spoke to the secretary there, she's emailing me the history and work done then viewing on Saturday.
You know alot about this cerb , do you know of it or do you just have a brilliant memory?
Just trying to avoid buying a lemon ! I've already been ripped off by dream machines, I don't want it to happen again !!
Thanks

Absolutely spot on , just got an email from the seller with the history, all done at barnet tvr which I believe no longer exists and then castle tvr and lastly PSR automotive which is a porsche lotus garage.
The gaps in the history would support what youve said about it being stuck at Barnet.
What's my next move ?

I was in the market for a Cerb 4/5 years ago and this was one of the cars I followed.

I took comfort from the fact that the guys at Barnet would not buy a car into stock unless it was a good car but the absence of history (invoices) and the fact that there was no rebuild/refresh did worry me enough not to pursue.

I suspect the fact that it had not run (not any material distance) in a long time was the cause of the head gasket perishing?

If I were in your shoes I would at the very least get Power/Str8 6 to do a full inspection before you make a decision. Has the head gasket been replaced?

Sorry I don't want to sound too subjective but even good Cerbs are not cheap to run let alone one with no history. A Power inspection and 1 year warranty from them will give peace of mind.

Good luck! Fantastic cars!

I agree , from what I've read barnet tvr did have a good rep. The inspection would be a perfect idea but how do I get a car in one garage 120 miles north to tvr power ?? Buy it then take it back if I'm not happy?
I suspect DMS will give a 3 month warranty but I'll ask.
Thanks

The car was offerred to me in June, can probably find the previous owner's mobile if you want to speak to him.

However, Stephen Wallinger of SelbyTVR aka Intermotion will travel and inspect the car for you and should be able to do a leakdown test on the engine.

I believe Dan Taylor TVR in Kent have a very good reputation - I would ask the sellers if Dan could do a pre purchase inspection at his premises. Cant be too far from you?

That Cerb needs a proper test drive and a thorough going over by someone who knows the cars.

Keep us posted - hoping this Cerb turns out to be a good one smile.

A Cerb that has had a head gasket failure with no receipt for the repair?
If it was an AJP I would run away - being a Speed 6 I would run very, very fast.

Just an update - went to look at the car again on Saturday , got there at 11.00 , and , they were shut.
Yes I didn't call beforehand but I had told them on Tuesday that I would be there on Saturday.
So started the emails to the seller. As it has no rebuild I want some sort of checks done to the engine, leakage, compression, tune , to try and give some sort of indication of health without taking the engine apart. The car isn't far from Elmwoodtvr but this would be done at my cost I'm told , and hes not moving from the 17k price tag. Personally I think the seller should pay concidering the bits of history I know. I wonder how much the inspection would cost? Any ideas ?
I'm stumped .

I think it's fair that you should pay for an inspection but it will really need to be done at a tvr specialists own garage ie with tools and ramps.
If the car hasn't had much spent on it over that last few years then be prepared to dig deep.
The front end repairs would put me off (judging by the pics).
I am sure he is happy to wait for someone who just buys without inspections etc...

The inspection would be done at Elmwood tvr just up the road from him, it would be different if he was a tvr dealer but he's not , just a mormal garage. The front end issue you noticed is quite evident when you look at it, crash damage or just misaligned bonnet? Something else to check. Let's see what Elmwood charge .

Inspection is a must IMO. Best money you will spend especially when buying from a non specialist.

Walk away from this one. Seriously with the grief you're getting now, it's not worth it. They'll be another along that floats your boat.

When I bought mine the check i did was to start the engine and just leave it running for the 30 or 40 mins it took to go around the car and check every bit, then i took it for a test drive. The ability to hold a stable temperature and oil pressure over half an hour of idling was a big plus and meant that i put down a deposit then and there even though there was no significant history.

Its not the bonnet as far as I can see....it looks more like the wing and also the headlamp cowling bodge).

So make sure any inspection checks chassis for damage (as well as corrosion) and the engine etc...
But if you are paying that much for a S6 with very little recent history then you are likely to have big bills. I wouldnt think a warranty from the selling garage would cover very much at all.... I used to work in Kingswood and the garage lot there at the time wasnt particularly great.

Personally I would spend my money James Agger.

For £17K you arent that far off a late 4.5 Red Rose with decent history.

How often do decent RR come up though?
17k would be quite a way off a RR price's I would have thought?
