Which oil do you use...

Rang Castrol, nice Castrol technical expert chappy said use 10W60 fully synthetic and ignore all the bks about zinc - it protects when bare metal is rubbing on bare metal, ie when you have lost 90% of your oil, by which time you are screwed anyway.....
Good friend of mine who has owned Chimaeras for 12 years or more (and now has a Cerb as well) has found out the hard way what happens to cam shafts when you use an oil with insufficient ZDDP. He is the archetypal 'maintained regardless of cost' owner, paying for very frequent servicing and using the car predominantly on track. Our AJP8 engined Cerbs have even more aggressive cam profiles coupled with flat tappets - encouraging owners to ignore ZDDP levels is totally irresponsible.

Handbook for 4.2 says:
Running in to 1,000 miles - Mobil Delvac 10W30
From 1,000 miles to 6,000 miles - Mobil Delvac 15W40
6,000 miles on - Mobil 1 5W50
Delvac, as far as I can see, is a diesel engine oil designed to give good engine protection.
So, who knows which oil is correct?
When running in you need to allow a little wear to allow the parts to mate with each other, so the Delvac is probably a mineral oil or a semi-synthetic. The Mobil 5W50 was a fully synthetic oil and would minimise wear, but I'm not sure if you can get it anymore. I run Fuchs Titan 10W50 (previously known as Silkolene) and iirc quite a few of the old guard did.Running in to 1,000 miles - Mobil Delvac 10W30

I used to buy Fuchs Titan from Unipart but of course that's now shut.....
.
Once was talking to a Castrol engineer in a bar in Switzerland.
He told me that, as long as you don't mix mineral with synthetic, then they're all much of a muchness. The most important factor was to change the oil before it was passed its best.
I have followed his advice since and have run three cars to 240K Kms each, a sports bike to 76K miles and my '01 Cerb to 94K miles.
I change the Cerb before the Oil has done 6K with Mobil 1 0-40W.

That bothers me too, a quick search on mobil 1 found this , hopefully that is reliable info. Our AJP8 engined Cerbs have even more aggressive cam profiles coupled with flat tappets - encouraging owners to ignore ZDDP levels is totally irresponsible.
Our engine has only ever been run on Mobil 1, the cam & buckets still look almost like new & I want them to stay like that!
I have been running Halfords 5w/50 fully synth in all my TVr's for a few years now and it seems to be a decent oil (holds good pressure hot or cold) and doesn't need much topping up at all. I have just been checking out the zinc level and it is 0.11% and the phosphorus is 0.1%. I am not sure if that is good or bad but when they have the offers on you can buy the oil at very good prices.
I bought mine when they were doing a half price offer so 5L for £17. I bought 15L and they also let me use a 20% anything promotion they had on the weekend I bought it so 15L of 5w/50 fully synth and it was about £40.

Silkolene Pro S (Now Fuchs Titan) is more than 1400ppm for Zinc according to another PH thread (input from Opie Oils).
Not sure there's a definitive answer to this thread but this is what I'd recommend. It's certainly what I use and have done ever since I did the trusty evening or six of swatting up when I got mine in 08. Previous owner used it too.bobbins said:

so that would be 1000ppm of phosphorus and 1100ppm of Zinc, quite high compared to some.

Delvac - Yes indeed, a diesel oil with high detergent levels, fine when running in, but beware using high revs as you risk foaming and oil starvation.Running in to 1,000 miles - Mobil Delvac 10W30
