Had a look back at around 30 pages and no mention of oil used. So a quick poll:

What oil do you use and what engine is it in?

Personal choice but I use 10W40 semi synthetic in all TVR's. Oil consumption is now virtually zero whereas with 5W40 fully synthetic I was often topping up. Would suggest avoiding anything xxW30 as too thin IMHO.

I use castrol rating 10w50 motorcycle oil.
Nice viscosity, can take the heat well and doesnt foam.
Recommended by TVR garage
It is quite pricey tho, he uses castrol 10w60 (because he can buy it in drums)

20/50 mineral from Asda ....................

Not really 5/40 Castrol Edge fully syn I've used Castrol in all my race bike's and Karts 2 stroke and 4 stroke and all my road bikes and cars my first engine tuner suggested it and I've never deviated from it.

I'm also using this in my 4.5, but I've bought Motul 300V Chrono 10W-40 for the next oil change, plus one of David Brown's V8filters as discussed in another thread.

Any particular reason for changing.
I've been happy enough with all the Morris lubricants and use them throughout the whole car, found a decent supplier who gives me some discount and always provides a good service.

Rang Castrol, nice Castrol technical expert chappy said use 10W60 fully synthetic and ignore all the bks about zinc - it protects when bare metal is rubbing on bare metal, ie when you have lost 90% of your oil, by which time you are screwed anyway.....

I actually run my Chimaera on Shell Helix Racing 10w60 (track days are an addiction) - would that be appropriate for your super duper AJP race engines? bow

You can get it at £105 for a nice yellow 20 litre drum off Ebay:

Motul 300V is a true synthetic oil (if you smell it you'll understand what I mean), but I couldn't bring myself to pay £150 for an oil fill, that is just a bit much. Opie were doing a significant discount so I stopped prevaricating.

APM recommended Silkolene PRO R 15W-50 Ester fully synthetic, so that's what it uses...well used! Not cheap, though Opie do have it on offer every now and then.

So is there a trend here ?

0w40 - as originally specified by TVR but could be too thin
15w50 or 10w60 - high mileage engine
10w40 - alternative to original spec for low mileage engines

Handbook for 4.2 says:

Running in to 1,000 miles - Mobil Delvac 10W30
From 1,000 miles to 6,000 miles - Mobil Delvac 15W40
6,000 miles on - Mobil 1 5W50

Delvac, as far as I can see, is a diesel engine oil designed to give good engine protection.
So, who knows which oil is correct?

Well the 10W-60 recommendation was from the builder of my new engine for after 2k miles running in only. (Running in on mineral oil)
