I've got the '97 dashboard with several holes running along the windscreen edge.

This morning was a right misty peasouper and the screen took ages to clear so I was wondering.... Do the later style big vents clear the screen better than the peashooter hole style?

The thought of either getting a newer style dash or blanking off and relocating the bottom vents to make them top mounted is rattling around in my brain - tell me I'm an idiot or will this idea be do-able or even beneficial?

Seeing that changing either the dash or the vents will entail taking out the windscreen (its bonded to the bottom edge of the dash), far and away the best solution for misting up is to replace the screen with a heated one.

Mine got changed for a heated screen due to lack of availability of the unheated ones and I am so glad it did! It was the best usability upgrade ever - completely transformed how much the car got used over the winter months. Before, the drivers side of the screen stayed fogged up on a cold day no matter what I did with vents and blowers, but the heated screen clears completely in around a minute and stays that way. I just wired its relay in with the rear demister.

Did you shut all the other vents so only air was directed through the windscreen hole vents? Mine always seems to work ok if I do that.

All other vents shut and it still took about 10 minutes to half clear the screen.

I'm thinking of a new screen anyway (delaminating in the bottom corner), so the upgrade would be done then but I like the idea of a heated screen if I can get my hands on one.

I find keeping the windows partly open helps the vents work better

best thing is to make sure that the screen is clean, you can use an anti fogging solution. that helps, aircon is always good for demisting, but don't think it does the hot side, I usually find that by the time the car is warm the screen is clear and time to drive.
