starter motor problems - seems to work fine from cold and sometime s fine wen hot -but quite regularly doesn't (no clicking sound at all ) as i have had to bump start the car 4 times since friday ( which was 2 days ago )- you can't always park on hill so its proving to be quite a tiresome ritual.

i do remember once that the starters can get a problem on one part of them wen they get hot ..?

but also remember that - once there was an issue with the immobiliser not releasing for some reason after one stops briefly ...?

Also some starters had a shim under the mount, to do with heat expansion and locking up.

Something to bear in mind

A lot of '70's and '80's Alfas suffered with the same problem. The cure is to wire a relay between the starter feed from the key and the solenoid feed. Maybe worth a try?

That is what I have done, but before doing that it is worth simply replacing the starter motor relay with a brand new relay.

Very likely the immobiliser, mine did this last year, might be worth by passing it to see what the fault does then, give Dave at HF soulotions a call he is very familiar with these fault and might be able to shed some light and help out.

Ah does not sound like immobiliser, most likely cause if the motor is ruff remove the starter and bench check it would be my next move.

Worth checking the wire on the starter solenoid body, I had mine fail as well and it caused intermittent starting a few years ago.

I believe there is a clutch in the starter which can wear out and cause that grating sound. It needs sorting assist can damage the teeth on the flywheel which means you would need a new fly as well as the starter sorting out
I had my starter repaired when it started to make those noises and it seems OK at the moment.
