The time has come to me as it has already come to many of you and the car is about to go in for chassis restoration.

Unlike some of you it seems I don't have an unlimited budget so I'm trying to make a shopping list of essential extras while the body is off in order to source parts myself and prioritise. Water pipes/hoses are all new so no need for them to be done.

So far I have....

Full Polybush set
Heat Shielding
Brake Lines (following inspection)
Fuel Lines (following inspection)

Thanks.

Just after buying mine, I was flicking through the wad of invoices and found a recent one where someone had tip-exed over the comments from the garage regarding both outriggers needing replacing and one of the main chassis members by the manifold being holed! eek
Took it to a local specialist who confirmed that this was the case but because the rest of the car (and chassis) was in such good condition, I agreed a refund with the seller to cover most of the repairs rather than just taking it back.

Hi Adz

I was just helping my mate this week strip his chim down
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

My short list to add to what you have would be...( depending on conditions of parts)

Chassis bolt set
Drop links
Ball joints
All the diff bushes
Engine and gear box mounts

Who is doing the work? Or you stripping it your self and building back up?

Hi Scotty, hows things mate?

Mat Smith is doing the body off, I toyed with the idea of stripping it myself but the hassle involved and loosing the entire summer of driving swayed me to the more expensive option which at least should get me back on the road for some nice weather driving later this year. It came about after starting a 'chassis/suspension' tarting up session and soon realising that the time had come...

Good shout there with those items - thanks.

Thanks for that - useful thread. I know there are a lot of threads about but that one is good to pick the info from.

Good to read positives there on zinc spraying as this is my preferred route. On top of this I am going for 2 coats of Bilt Hamber epoxy mastic (painting myself) which has a resin hardener and is supposedly tougher than powder coating and less brittle. The final coating will be a clear waxoyl.

Keeping well, how's the family? Sounds like a good plan and being able to enjoy your summer as well, look forward to seeing a few photos of it.

Good thanks mate, yeah the thought of not driving this summer now that I finally have it in my own double garage to use it freely forced me into the quick restoration route.

I'd be inclined to forget that bit...

It's horrible stuff if you need to get it off or work on the car. Just stick with what you've already got planned.

Definitely forget the waxoil! With zinc and a good epoxy or powder coat, it serves no useful purpose apart form making everything sticky and stinky when you want to do any work in the future.

Don't polybush it.
Standard rubbers are more than adequate
And it'll eat polybushes and spit them out within the year whistle

POR 15 top coat, the two pack stuff. Mine still looks like when it was done (when I clean it).

All new nuts and bolts, dont put back the old ones. Seriously you have to take everything apart so it's foolish to scrimp as it's so easy to replace bits whilst it's apart, bits that are usually difficult to replace. My view was to replace for new as much as possible if it was worn, so I wouldn't have to worry about it for a few years.

So, reading my bill, I had replaced:
All bushes
hand brake cables
both upper and lower ball joints
Track rod ends
All brake hoses and pipes
New CV boots
All new fuel hoses
New fuel pump (it didn't run quite right)
All new red silicone cooling hoses (I'd already replaced the water manifold with a stainless one)
New engine mounts and gearbox mount
New starter motor as again it was a little intermittent
Steering UJ's

Also, as a lot of the interior has to come out, it's the perfect time for a good clean.

FWIW I'd agree and rubber would have been my preferred route. However... You can't get an off-the-shelf kit if you go down the rubber route and it's a PITA sorting it all out.

I went down the PowerFlex route, on the basis there's an off-the-shelf kit which'll make the rebuild easier. I can then swap out for rubber at a later date.

Try polymax for bushes mounts o rings etc.

I used them for the heat barrier o rings on the throttle bodies and the injector o rings

Are the suspension bushes semi bonded or fully to the outer and inner sleeves. If the are semi then the do a good range

Thanks for this, will start to source what I can. Certainly will do all bolts etc, be stupid not to..

As for clear chassis wax I was considering this...

http://www.bilthamber.com/dynax-uc

It should be a long way removed from the horrible messy black stuff but still undecided If I will go for it anyway yet. Could always get some to try and maybe just use for ultra protection on outriggers but will see...

Bushes seems to be a bit of debate which way to go. Will speak further about this with Mat Smith as i know he will have done all options. Are the rubber ones a real pain to get hold of?

Appreciate the input from all.

Hiya I got a great price of advice off camel landy when getting my chassis done, went along the lines of change refurb replace everything that isn't accesible under normal conditions.
If your shocks aren't busted clean em up and stick em back on, resist the temptation to powder coat your brake calipers, do get all your hoses, bushes ( stuff made of rubber) changed. Pirtek are excellent for those difficult to get ones.
Take a look at my thread that followed my chassis ( T540 VHO)
Rectify all your defects there will be many hidden little things that add up.
Oh and top of your list should be access to 8k to pay for it all, but you will have a reliable awesome thing, the word car doesn't come close to being the word that describes what you have in the garage.😄😄😄😄😄😄
Best of luck

Steering rack, I had mine rebuilt while the car was in bits.

Exhaust Manifolds?

Starter motor rebuild?

Check the 100amp fuse on the engine.

I was advised not to polybush mine, with the exception of the diff mounts, and the only reason they are now poly is to eliminate the well documented PITA it is to replace them again in the future.
