Does anyone have the part numbers for the 4.5 coil packs? From my understanding they're ford items anyway?

I fitted generic Chinese copies costing approx £25 ea inc p&p almost four years ago. The only problem I've had to fix was that one of them came away from the plate they're mounted on - entirely my fault.

Now on eBay for £20 inc p&p.

I'm about to replace mine (4.2) as the drivers bank only fires well around 2500 revs.
Think I'll replace both to keep continuity.

Have you taken them out and are you using genuine parts or cheap copy's?

I bought pattern parts. Tried to fit them yesterday without removing the fuel rail etc.....but one of the bolts holding the rear coil pack down is not unscrewing, looks like the captive nut underneath is stuck to the bolt. Joy.
A quick swap has now turned into a not so quick swap.

How big a job is it to change the coil packs?

I did this job a couple of weeks ago (one of the coil packs needed remounting) so it's fresh in my memory. I'm not convinced it's practical to change the coil packs without removing the fuel rail. Getting the injectors reseated without issue is not easy, even more so if your heads have had a skim (I have to loosen one of the intake manifolds). So I would say potentially awkward, rather than impossible.

The worst thing that could happen is that you drop a nut/washer down one of the intakes, that would ruin your day.

If the bolts are corroded in the mounting plate a massive job.

Replaced the oil pressure switch while you are in there as there's a very good chance it will fail.

Just changed both my coil packs. Mine is a 4.2 so I managed to get them out between the fuel rails without actually removing the fuel rails themselves. A couple of bolts had seized so it's took longer than I anticipated but it is done now. Make sure your big fuse is well insulated when doing the job or disconnect the battery before just in case.

Ridds, you were right about changing the oil pressure switch too, mine is now flickering!

If only I had read your post BEFORE completing the job in hand.

Oh well at least I now know the process re removing the coil packs. JOY!

The problem is replacing the coil pack still hasn't solved the problem, my drivers side bank still doesn't run at idle, however it seems to kick in when driving at high revs.

Any suggestions?

Check the lambda sensor and its connector on that bank. The lambda reading is only used at lower throttle openings which might explain why the problem goes away at higher revs.

My lambda sensor connectors used to fill with water and do all sorts of strange things until I replaced them with properly waterproof ones.

Thanks, I will give it a go.

You could clean the connectors and pack with this stuff /

Quick update - one of them failed after about four and a half years. Now replaced with a pair costing £31 inc p&p.

Also, it is possible to removed the coil packs without disturbing the fuel rail on a 4.5.

Nw it's funny that this topic has popped up coz I thought that it was time to change my coils (after having done 100K) and had a look around at what was available.
A few years ago I replaced my Lambdas with a "cheap pair" and lo, what happened, about 1500 mniles from home one of them starts playing up.

With that experience in mind when I looked at RaceTech's website I was surprised to see two components listed for the same purpose

but, not wanting to risk fate, I opted for the most expensive of the two which, including postage, cost £240.

You can imagine my mood when I opened the package to discover....
