Its not too tricky to space the fronts out tbh - usually you only need a few mm of clearance. a few rings of hardboard would probably do it., though you can go deeper, but it'll restrict the window from fully opening. You also have the issue of behind the speaker there is a hole in the door skin, this can be enlarged to gain another couple mm of space.

I went for the option of fitting some DLS Iridium 6.2s that I had lying around which use smaller/more powerful neodymium motors.

Thanks a lot, that’s all really helpful to know smile

I’ve bitten the bullet, and ordered a headunit (pic below) which should from the reviews have enough adjustment to clear the overhang of the dash… I’m going to add that, check the quality, and maybe order a Vibe mini-amp to add in before going for speakers, just to see if I can drive what’s already there well first.

Which one is that? I've love to replace my head unit with an android autoi/carplay type. I didn't think the ones with the pop out screens had the clearance.

Morning!

So this one is the AVH-Z7200DAB... a couple of the YouTube reviews show a set out casing, and the hinging distance from the casing and angle for the screen are both adjustable. It might be completely terrible, but I figured there was only one way to find out biggrin.

Got an OU assignment to get written up this week and next so probably won't get much chance for a play. When I do though, I'll stick up some photos and a review and fit, finish, and quality of OS/carplay etc.

I'm thinking of adding a Vibe mini-Amp too if it needs it, and going to try and stick with stock speakers for now.

I've seen some try the pop out screens before, but a few years back admittedly. Either the screens ended up at an angle pointing downwards, or the head unit had to be spaced out so stuck out from the dash.

The Pioneer with the separate screen to mount on the front looked like it got around that issue, but then spoiled the clean looks of the dash, which the pop out screen would have when not in use/parked...

That one looks like the screen is quite close to the head unit and goes upwards - which is where the lip is... I hop I'm wrong.

Yeah you're absolutely right that this is the one... there is adjustment so you can set the hinge position further out than it shows in the photos. I'm hoping it will be far enough out for the screen to stand vertically and virtually resting against the dash overhang, that would be enough for me smile

Will create a new thread as and when I get to complete properly, but I’ve just managed to do a test fit as the units arrived this afternoon.

First impressions are good… as the photo shows, it’s close! To the point where it does sit forward of 90 degrees to the chassis of the stereo… the hinge mechanism is sprung loaded, so in the setting shown in the image the screen back (hard metal casing) is touching the overhang, but I’m quite happy with this as it provides extra support and the spring loading doesn’t load the mechanism in any way.

Sounds good on initial testing, and I’m impressed with the CarPlay integration. The switch illumination can all be adjusted too, and it works with the ignition cut out (screen retracts automatically) and dimming with side lights.

As I say, when I get chance to finish the install I’ll create a thread with lots of photos in the daylight.

Looks good! And having the screen rest against the dash pad should stop it wobbling around.

On the Android head unit question I've had this guys Facebook SP6 restoration on one of my tabs for a while as he has a nice working Android pop-out head unit which runs RS-AJP too smile

The closest I found was this one over on eBay but I haven't purchased it or really researched it in depth - just the fact that it was an adjustable screen position made it look like it should work
