Was running brilliantly but then the Cerb started dropping to 7 cylinders/missing on the way to work Fri, same on the way home, but got worse.. Was fine when first started, and cleared briefly a few times. Pulled lead/coil connectors, tried it again this morning and it was fine for the first few mins..

Left it parked up came to move it and it died, realised I'd run it out of fuel (yes whoops!) Brimmed it and it was running a tiny bit better, it would take some throttle.. Although it was popping and banging out of character. Now parked up at home went to drive it and it won't start, just spinning over, give it some throttle and it splutters into very rough life but you get smoke from the top of the engine which stinks of fuel, but basically won't run.

I'd initially thought plugs/leads/coils (cheap enough to throw at it, and it is probably due them tbh), due to missing under load. Now I'm a little concerned it may be a bit more involved due to the fuel flavoured smoke..

Could be dozens of things. Can you get the ECU software on it?

I had problems with the software but downloaded the new version from EvoOlli and it opens up ok. Do a search on here for it.
Its a good starting point at least

Sincerely hope it's just a dud plug.
Best wishes

So do I Aide.. I have plugs, leads and coils ready to go on this weekend. No signs of anything untoward yet, removing the rest of the plugs should tell a story.

Might be worth doing a compression test while you've got all the plugs out?

I'm hoping not?!!

Do the cheap ones work as well as the more expensive testers? I've not got one atm..

I have same problems, and I'm doing the same parts, will compare notes later then! My ECU was giving no faults apart from AFR on all cylinders, which points in all directions. Mines due coils, so starting with ignition, then balancing TPots and hopefully that just leaves the lambdas. You really do need the software to check and set up things properly.

I had a bit of a misfire a few months ago and did a comp test. These are the results I got, have no idea if good, bad or indifferent? Turned out only to be a plug lead not home.

Drivers Bank, starting at the front...

No2. 249 PSI or 17 BAR
No4. 240 PSI or 16.5 BAR
No.6 241 PSI or 16.6 BAR
No8. 240 PSI or 16.5 BAR

Passenger Bank, starting @ front,

No.1 252 PSI or 17.1 BAR
No.3 251 PSI or 17.1 BAR
No.5 255 PSI or 17.5 BAR
No.7 261 PSI or 18.1 BAR

Interesting to see if it is the same issue!

By way of comparison, here are mine mid top-end rebuild, some years ago (engine cold)

1 235
3 225
5 235
7 260

2 255
4 260
6 245
8 245

They are poor, over 15% variance, but considering the state of the followers and more importantly the corroded bores, not that bad.

If you are near Norwich, I could pop over with my tester?
