Is it me or are there quite a few cheap Cerberas on the net at the moment. I thought I had bought probably the cheapest around Cerbera around but know the seem to be breading. I'm very happy with but it's always the case, when you want there's none and when you don't....

The days of a good cheap Cerbera are over. Good ones are increasing in value, cars with issues are cheap...

Correct, I think they are to cheap! They need some good P.R. in classic car type rags to assist the prices. As time has passed I believe they have proved to be a far better bet than they were given credit for. All you tend to get from the ignorant is "Kevin McC said it was like a kit car in reverse!" Yes, thank you, ho ho. Maybe when new the original owners expected more? I can understand most would have switched from high end German barge type things, but now they make an exceptional buy. Apart from another TVR you still can't achieve the performance, the beautiful interior/exterior, the rush you get pressing the loud pedal from anything remotely in this or any other price range.

I've only checked PH but the cheapest 4.5 is more than three times as much as I paid for my basket case (running with MOT), so I'm probably not looking in the same place as you.

There are a couple on eBay for around 10-11k. I managed to get mine nice and cheap, it's got a good chassis and a recent engine rebuild, it does need some TLC though. Good ones seem to start at 15k upwards but if you are willing to spend a bit of time and money you can end up with a nice one. I'm thinking 2 to 3k on respray, 1k on interior and 500 for three and wheels powder coast. I didn't have 15k all at once so this was the only way I could own a Cerbera. It's the most exciting car I've ever owned and it makes me grin every time I drive it.

I would say they have definitely gone up in price in the past year or so but then again, so have all the other models.

As long as a project Cerb comes along at just the right time i'm ready to buy at the right price, i'll be happy and they can increase in value as much as they want after that.

Two very cheap ones on that auction site. Both mention good chassis but take that with a pinch of salt.
Very tempting none the less!

I saw one for 10k that said it had been garaged since 2013 and I thought what good value it was but you just know its going to cost a few quid to sort various problems out I would imagine.

Really?

I've had 3 quotes all around £6k plus vat to fully respray mine. I'm wondering if I can get a mask respray for around £3k but then there's doing it properly. I'm not scrimped anywhere so far.

How much interior are you having done for £1K?

My wheel refurb was £250 for all 4

6k for a full respray seems like alot, but it may well depend on where you are in the country. I've heard that S&D in Blackpool do show car standard work and they are roughly 4k, but there are other places local that will do a real nice job from 2k if you are gonna stick with the same colour.
My local powder coater will blast, zinc coat and powder coat at £40 a wheel, nice job too.
As for the interior, I need new headliner, new carpets and all the alcantara bits including door cards etc. DC trimmers quoted around £1250 which I think is very reasonable but seeing how easy the interior comes apart I'm gonna tackle the carpets etc myself.
Don't get me wrong, if I had the money I would pay someone to take it away and do the lot, some of the cars on this forum are stunning but way out of my league. Mine is gonna be a long term project as and when I have the cash.

I have been quoted £650 for a front end respray in the original colour from a TVR paintshop.. They have been spraying them for 25yrs! Their work looks good as well. Now I am unsure as to why they are so cheap!

Depends where you are in the country. If you live down south, with companies having higher overheads, you will definatley pay much more. A high quality full respray including all the door shuts etc would be £6k+ in my area..

Full removal of lights, glass, doors, boot, bonnet. Prep, respray and reassemble. Then Rosso pearl is about £2k for the paint required. £6k plus vat looks quite cheap for the amount of work and paint.

If respray and body mods wanted I say give Adrian at Central TVR a call. They are a top bunch of lads and fully stand by what they do, nothing is too much for them!

After condition and service history, which we know are important, what is the effect of the age of the car on it's value?

Is an early 4.5 worth as much as a late one if they are similar in condition and mileage?

If not, what is the difference?

There seems to be two price levels. £10K +/- for ones that need a bit of work and £20K+ for nice cars. Not much in between.

Thoughts please.

Buy on condition. There are sub 15k cars that are very good and 20K plus ones that are rubbish. Age has an effect on the asking price but condition and history set the price that matters, ie the selling price.

For me, knowing what I know now, the unpleasantly big bills are in the chassis, engine. The big but tolerable bills are in bodywork, transmission, brakes, and interior. Probably in that order. Even the newest chassis is 10 years old and combined with a badly looked after mechanicals you could spend 20k or more late model which is a real lemon. Just had my chassis done and TBH it needed it 3 years ago which suggests that there are likely to be 2003 onward cars around at 22k or more with rot. I'd rather have a mint 98 than a rotten 2003.

I suppose, in short, if it's too cheap it's probably for a reason, conversely if I wanted to sell a lemon I would sell it quite high so nobody thought it was a lemon.

edited for speelling

I have owned a 1997 4.5 for about 7 years now and I am about to do a chassis refurbishment and general freshen up. When done I might sell her on so was curious about the range in prices.

Are you suggesting that most of the cars advertised for more than £20k are wishful thinking, or is the market moving up and that is the level that good one's should fetch?

I'm only speculating/anticipating/dreaming but the new line TVRs coming in at the £65-85k bracket but using the old blueprints of fibreglass and not much tech well I'm thinking surely your better off in an old line one as they don't rust (body) sort chassis and with S6 reliability and performance from good rebuilds I'm sure an old one at half that cost would be a bargain so £30-40k would tell me prices are surely to rise even faster than they are now??

Still doesn't bother me as I'm not selling mine wink
