Took the plunge with a Bosch 086 but I can't get the F1 in beside it for love or money. Mine is a later car and I see other late cars seem to have smaller compartments so will have to go for a red top instead I think. My old red top was only a 50ah - will that be enough? I've seen on here that some recommend min 70.

Anyone who's after a Bosch 086 please PM me!

Even my early 96 Cerbera struggles with that size, last battery change I went down a size to the Varta Silver 078 (D39) it will fit all cars and isn't that weak. I keep mine on a conditioner. Cheap enough at around £60 https://www.tayna.co.uk/Type-078-Varta-Silver-Dyna...

Beware not all 078 have the cca power of the Varta silver...

Evening Martin,

I had the same trouble with an 086 size battery. I modified the F1 panel by removing the part of the panel that slides down the side of the battery. Once I was happy that the panel was sitting properly again I then reinstated a heat barrier by bolting some nimbus heat shield to the F1 panel.

I also remove the battery baseplate / clamp

I would also recommend the D39, though for some reason my receipt says

D39 VARTA Silver Dynamic 12V 63Ah Car Battery (077)

However it looks identical the one shown on Tayna, and fits easily without forcing anything.

Thanks chaps. I really needed to get the car mobile this weekend so have reg'd in a Halfords job with the terminals the wrong way around, F1 is a bit tight but OK as a temp measure I think.

I managed to fit an 086 into my 2000 4.5 without modification to the F1 panel just had to leave the clamp off due to the length of the bigger battery and carefully route the cables but the long side of the panel did slide between the battery and the air box.

I stick with the 072 batteries (if you can find one with the recessed lugs). Banner is one company that sells them. I found a motorfactors had the right spec 072.
