Symptoms were.. No start (obviously), solenoid signal getting 12v, I can hear the starter solenoid clicking (I think, relay under the dash working obviously as it is switching 12v to the signal wire) but nothing from the starter. Pulled the starter and there is quite a bit of play in the pinion. Tried the usual jump etc.. But nothing at all.

I purchased a replacement off EBay (C.E. Smith) back in 2006, for £250. Think it only lasted a week before I threw it in the bin.
In the mean time, I got the original Tilton motor, rebuilt for £80. That was by a company called Midland Starter Motors in West Bromwich, and that's still going strong. I seem to recall that there was options as to the quality of the replacement parts used, being used, in the rebuild. But it was a long time ago
Edit... Testing wise, I'm guessing as well as the switched 12v+, there's a large 12v+ and a large 0v- ? Connections definitely tight on them. One cable, very low resistance to the pos of the battery. The other, low resistance to the neg of the battery ?

I've seen a local company offering rebuilt 2.4kw starters with a 12 month guarantee. London and Essex Auto electrics.
The terminals were tight when I removed it. If the cable was getting a voltage drop it would at least turn over albeit laboured surely? It was working fine one minute, not at all the next time I went to use it. I think the solenoid may have died..
