I'm still confused and a bit worried.

When the clutch is engaged its pushing on the fingers. The bearing is spinning round and the only thing stopping the whole thing from spinning round is a screw going through to the spline shroud?

The original is connected to the bell housing with the four big bolts you had trouble getting out. Yours have the equivalent of a screw close to the lever point of the shaft?

What happens when the bearing gets a bit dirty, or stiff?

I don't think I'm actually understanding the connection between the slave and the gearbox????
I think the standard bolting arrangement is more about pulling it flat than strength. It would take quite a bit to shear the bolt locating the Tilton, more than a stiff bearing I would say.

Julian,
The retaining bolt threads into the gearbox input bearing retainer, not the clutch shroud.

I've had the joy of doing the clutch slave on my car twice. The first time I took the engine and gearbox out as one complete until to let me tidy up the engine back, and swapped the failed standard TVR slave for a Raceproved unit. The second time I took the gearbox out from underneath the car to replace the Raceprooved with the Tilton. I didn't need to take the front pulley off to get the engine & gearbox out in one, getting the gearbox off and back on the car is a pain, but with a lot of perseverance, a pry bar, and a trolley jack to take the weight of it, it was just about possible.
For various reasons I had the gearbox off and did the slave seals and cylinder a number of times within a few months. Once you know what to do I found it really wasn't too bad a job to do from underneath with just pulling the gearbox back into the tunnel.

I'm the complete opposite, after days taking the skin off my knuckles on particularly frustrating bolts, I eventually decide to take the engine out. I sudden realise its not difficult to take the engine out and wonder why I spent days killing myself when on the engine stand its all easy to maintain.

Thanks for sharing this Adrian, looks like amazing work.

I am very optimistic that the Tilton will be more reliable than OEM.

I only have one big concern, and if CerbWill hadn't proved that it could be done then I would have serious doubts: Fitting the Gearbox.

With this arrangement you can't disengage the clutch before offering up the gearbox, which means it has to be perfectly aligned. Like you I have had the gearbox off several times, and I always find that refitting is a three man (or person) job: GF depresses clutch, assistant takes the weight of the gearbox, and I try to manoeuvre it into place whilst swearing profusely. Even after using an alignment tool we still couldn't fit the gearbox without my GF's assistance. And all that without the hassle of the Tilton's hydraulics.

Good luck and congratulations on your progress so far.
Encouraging words, thanks Paul.

I've had the gearbox out more times that I'd like to admit tbh!

However, I've found that lowering the engine allows you to get the box out and resting on the manifolds. Then, after you rotate it 180 degrees, if you raise the engine up again you can get it out – by feeding it down and forward, spigot first – with the bellhousing still in situ.

I remove and refit it by myself - I have a T5 Spigot shaft to alighn the clutch (two actually) and I've never had any issues. Plus I've never had to pry the exhaust manifolds open or remove the gear selector.

The new release bearing is pretty small and the bellhousing hole large enough to accommodate it so I don't think there will be any remove/fit issues.

Peter Rendi (crypto) had a Tilton release bearing fitted by his garage in Switzertland and has been running for around a year now. He said to me that it's been fine so far, which is a positive sign wrt to reliability.

Some feed and bleed hoses with heat shielding arrived today:

And some cap head bolts with lock nuts to see if they're suitable as an anti-rotation bolt.

Hi Aide,

How's it going with the mods?
I'll be doing this soon as well.
Do you think it's doable without taking the engine out?
And which exact slave did you order?
Sorry for all the questions and best of luck smile

Nils, it can be done with the engine in place. Removing the gearbox with the car on axle stands is difficult but doable. As for the slave you need a Tilton 60-6000 and a 61-628 mounting sleeve.

Thank you for the info CerbWill. Probably going to lose a square foot of skin and a half pint of blood. Really looking forward to it... biggrin

Hi Nils,

Just waiting on the engine to come back now.

I have other jobs that I need to do this week as well like replace some heat shielding on pipes etc. and treat the chassis.

The slave is fitted and more or less set in its final position.

Just need to order some service parts for the reassembly and installation.
