How can this happen when there are speed cameras on the A9?

Speed cameras don't do fk all to help driving standards.

Poor driving caused that accident, not paying attention or diving to conditions, or wearing sunglasses to help reduce sun glare.

There's your answer.

Instead of knocking everyone down to the same ste basic level, they should be trying to improve driving standards across the board.

can I be pedantic and point out that the average speed cameras are apparently not active on the dual sections? My best guess would be the cars bunched up too tight as is usual at those sections and somebody did a brake test or a dodgy undertake which then caught all the cars up in it.

I don't think you picked up on my sarcasm AJM.......I completely agree with your view, well apart from the diving bit, don't think there was any water involved.

This isn't anywhere near any of the speed cameras south of Inverness, its North and not covered, so no real point here.

It looks like two days in a row of people driving too fast over the top of a hill which has very poor light conditions, reflections of the light on the road making it difficult to see.

I don't drive that stretch that often, but when I do and it is busy, I never feel that safe on it. High speeds, people playing chicken at lairy junctions, not much braking distances being left.

Yeah, talk of speed cameras having a profound effect on safety on the A9 makes me react in a similar fashion....... even though the camera zone ends way before this accident site, as I've found out above.

I would imagine it was a case off blinded by low winter sun, its been quite bad in Inverness the last two mornings.

They had a big van with an electronic sign out this morning saying "warning low sun".

I love that in general, people can no longer be trusted to take into account road conditions and something as difficult and unusual as the sun, causes two days worth of mayhem.

The sun of course is such a rare event that when the glare is so bad you cant see properly, cracking on at top speed is the best way to go.

I think the problem would be the opposite. People slow down (as they should as they can't see where they're going) and the car behind bashes into them before they realise where they are.

I love how Transport Scotland's answer to everything is an electronic sign. Used to be the case that it had to be rain of biblical proportions before the gantry signs on the M8 were turned on, now the slightest drizzle seems to result in them all showing a mix of 40mph & Caution Surface Water.

Few weeks ago I was driving home on a Sunday night, every gantry & roadside VMS was lit up as above, even though the road was only slightly damp. Spotted a police car pulling onto the hard shoulder on the opposite side, then looked up - VMS ahead said "Pedestrians in road". That (critical) message had been totally lost amongst the sea of irrelevant ones that I'd been seeing since I joined the motorway. Most recent idiotic one they've come up with is flashing yellows and "New slip road open"(change display)"A8(E) Chapelhall" on a single line overhead gantry - distracting & pointless. Maybe show it as a static message without lights on a VMS, but not on the gantries & not as an apparently important message.
