Just been quoted nearly £100 by Green Flag for next year's breakdown cover on my 52 plate 540i

To be fair AA and RAC are even more

However there seem to be a whole raft of much cheaper providers but I've never heard of most of them

Who has experience of any of the cheaper breakdown companies and are you perfectly happy with them or wish you'd never bothered?

Any pointers gratefully received...

Some InsCos provide breakdown as an add on. I have this with NFU, can't recall exact cost, maybe around £35.00

Not sure on your budget, but I got AA breakdown cover, plus national recovery, plus parts and labour (5x claims up to £500 each) for £74. I've already used 2x recovery, one from Norwich to Sheffield on a flatbed truck and 1x parts claim for £203.
Method: use Quidco, make sure you spend £155 - mine was £156 I think. Then once you get the cash back (£82 for me) it'll give you a great deal. I received my cash back 2 days ago, so it takes about 3 months to come but it's worth it!

Autoaid usually come up in recommendations - https://www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/ - although you pay for the recovery and reclaim later.

This has a summary of various deals too - http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/car-insurance/bre... - you can do things like pay for RAC cover in Tesco Clubcard points if you have them going spare.

I did have this in the past and found out to my cost that the free cover was local only.

I'm looking at full UK cover including onward travel and home start also. Not euro though.

But thanks!

My wife has used Autoaid several times and they've always been excellent.

I have a couple of policies with Rescue My Car (https://www.rescuemycar.com) - unfortunately at the only time I've ever needed to use them I couldn't remember their name and ended up calling the RAC out at great expense. Therefore I can't say if they are any good, they are cheap though.

Isn't getting breakdown cover for the UK a total ballache with ADAC now?

If it is easy, please explain how you go about getting it.

Your bank might offer it with an account upgrade.

I pay £10 a month for a rewards account and get:

RAC cover with home start
Mobile Phone insurance
Travel insurance
Loads of other st I've not even looked at.

Definitely good VFM.

I don't need any of those other than the breakdown cover so not good VFM at £120 (for me)

Glad you're happy with it of course...

Upvote for Autoaid. Most recent time I used them the claim was processed automatically by the recovery guy and I didn't have to pay anything.

Towed to a garage of my choice, and arrived quicker than it took for me to get a cup of coffee from the place across the road from where I broke down.

There are different levels of cover of course, I wouldn't discount it before talking to your bank to see if it suits you.

From my account (at no extra cost if my balance stays over £4000) I get:

Worldwide travel insurance
Up to 80 years of age, cover for you and your family (if eligible) for up to 62 consecutive days per trip (for Winter Sports maximum 31 days cover in any calendar year).

Breakdown cover
UK Roadside Assistance whether you’re in your own vehicle or someone else’s. The cover includes Relay, Home Start and Stay Mobile.

Mobile phone insurance
Worldwide cover for loss, theft, damage and breakdown (including faults).

Home emergency cover
Fast, professional help for home emergencies.

Card Loss Assistance
Help for when your credit, debit and store cards get lost or stolen. You can register the cards of your family if they live with you.

Identity Monitor
Get help to spot the early warning signs of identity theft.

That's been my experience as well, although without the coffee part.

I have cover with my Flex Plus account that's £10 a month, that has euro breakdown along with the other benefits I use like travel insurance and phone insurance so it works out well for me.
